After a 1-3 start, Destrehan has found its groove.
The Wildcats (10-3) won their ninth straight game Tuesday in a 20-1 District 7-5A win over Central Lafourche and has collected victories against teams including Dominican, Chapelle and Zachary during the streak.
“We’re starting to compete for seven full innings a game and we’re swinging the bats much better than we did to start the year,” Destrehan coach Kenny Montz said. “A lot of my older girls really stepped up swinging the bats, and my younger girls played really good defense. We’re not striking out a lot. It’s all been coming together for us.”
Destrehan pitcher Tyler Oubre pitched a perfect game against H.L. Bourgeois last week and also a one-hitter against West Jefferson a game earlier, the freshman starter starting to lock into the zone in her first season with the team.
The win over West Jefferson came in four innings by the 15-run rule, 15-0. Oubre pitched all of them, allowing a single hit, striking out eight and walking none in the shutout performance. Against Bourgeois, she went a complete five innings (also by the 10 run rule) and struck out nine, allowing no baserunners at all in a 10-0 win.
Montz said Oubre, a freshman who is in the midst of her debut season on the mound, showed clear ability as she rose through middle school and travel games in years prior, but also that freshmen can be unpredictable in how they perform game to game at the varsity level.
“You couldn’t know until she got out there, but she’s met expectations so far,” Montz said. “I see a more confident pitcher on the mound today than I did to begin the year.”
A back-and-forth win over Dominican highlighted the HHS tourney for Destrehan. Dominican led 7-5 after scoring four runs in the fifth inning, but Destrehan answered in the sixth by scoring five of their own. Dominican scored two runs in the top of the seventh to come within a run of tying things up, but the Wildcats got out of a two-on jam to close things out.
Gia Zeringue hit a home run, doubled and overall went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead DHS at the plate. Kaela Schiro went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Oubre went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Oubre earned the win, allowing nine runs, but just two earned, on 10 hits. She struck out four and walked none.
In this week’s win over Central Lafourche Tuesday, Zeringue scored four runs, drove in four runs and hit a home run in a 20-1 decision. Kaela Schiro went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs and Lainnie Dugas went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
“I’ve seen improvement from Day One I’m checking this in style, all the way through,” he said.
Destrehan will host Thibodaux in district action today at 4 p.m., then this weekend the Wildcats head to Frasch Park in Sulphur for tournament action in the Sulphur Spring Classic. DHS will play Comeaux at 3:45 p.m. Friday, then is set for an 8:30 a.m. start Saturday against Parkway and a 12:30 start against host Sulphur.
Montz has brought his teams to play in the midseason tournament for all but one year in his eight season tenure. He likes to have his team play at Frasch Park because it’s where the annual state softball tournament takes place, and the atmosphere for tournament play at the multi-field facility is a unique one.
“I bring them there with a purpose in mind, that I don’t want it to be a shock to them if and when we reach the state tournament,” Montz said. “They’ll have been there before, seen the venue, and they’ll kinda know what to expect.”
