Lady Tigers win 3 of 5 before the new year

Though the Lady Tigers fell in a heartbreaker in their final game of 2017, the end of the year saw Hahnville capture wins in three of its last five games to ride into 2018 with some momentum at its back.

Hahnville fell 45-44 to Northshore on Dec. 29, but earned victories over Terrebonne, 50-38, Bourgeois, 55-41 and De La Salle, 79-38, over a two week span. The team’s other loss in that stretch came to St. Thomas Aquinas, 55-38.

The stretch of wins came after a dry spell that saw the Tigers struggle offensively through a series of games, and it moved Hahnville to a record of 12-9 overall.

“Sometimes, how we practice isn’t how we play and that game speed difference becomes a factor,” HHS coach Arrianna Martin said. “We can’t win games where we key players not scoring. We have to have that balance, not have nights where only one of our four top scorers is in double figures. Defensively we’ve been playing very hard, but (in getting wins) we have to convert offensively.

“Every night is different. Some nights, they’ll key in on this one and another on that one. It’s a matter of adjusting and finding that consistency we’re striving for.”

But with the bump in scoring, the Tigers defense still allowed 45 points or less in four of its last five games, maintaining its intensity level on that end of the court.

“It’s not any one person (defensively), it’s been a huge collaborative effort,” Martin said. “With district coming up, keeping it up is going to be a key for us. I think if our girls believe in what they can do, nobody’s going to stop them. We’re coming along with that mental part of the game and we’ll take district day by day.”

In the win over De La Salle, Kamryn Bartholomew scored a team-high 18 points. Makaila Carter scored 11, while Yasah Gale added eight.

Against St. Thomas Aquinas, Bartholomew and Carter each scored 15 points, while Kori Joseph and Gale each added 10.

In the loss to Northshore, Carter scored 15 and Bartholomew added 11.
