Luling man arrested in Des Allemands hit-and-run death

Juan Lujan, 29, of Luling has been arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run in the death of a Des Allemands man Saturday morning (Dec. 30).

A Louisiana State Police investigation located Lujan as the owner of a 2002 GMC Envoy that apparently hit and killed 60-year-old Michael Atkinson.

Lujan also was charged with improper lane usage, no driver’s license and for having a falsified inspection sticker.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, troopers responded to the fatal crash involving a bicyclist on U.S. Highway 90 just east of Cypress Drive.

Atkinson was eastbound on the shoulder of U.S. 90 near the right edge of the roadway. He was riding on a Roadmaster bicycle when he was struck from behind by an unknown eastbound vehicle that drifted onto the shoulder. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

It is unknown if impairment played a part in this crash, according to State Police.

Lujan was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center.
