Tried to burn apartment complex after eviction
Jerrian Brown, a Hahnville man who in March was accused of attempting to burn down an apartment duplex after he was evicted, will serve at least two years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted simple arson.
Brown, 28, was sentenced to five years in prison, but he can avoid serving three of those years by fulfilling the terms of his five-year probation.
The first two years were not suspended and he’ll serve immediately, with credit for time served since his arrest.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, the owner of an apartment duplex at 180 Elm St. in Hahnville on March 14 reported a strong gasoline odor near the exterior wall of that complex.
The owner reviewed video surveillance footage that revealed Brown poured gasoline along the duplex wall.
A Sheriff’s Office investigation determined Brown had been evicted from an apartment in the complex. He was initially charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of CDS and possession of drugs in presence of a minor under age 17.
He turned himself in to police on March 16. The state amended Brown’s charge from attempted aggravated arson to attempted simple arson as result of his plea bargain.
Upon his release from prison, he has been ordered to undergo evaluation and substance abuse treatment as mandated by his probation officer and program director.
Other terms of his probation are he must obtain a high school degree or equivalent.
He must also conduct a job search at least two times a week until he finds employment.
Brown is currently serving his sentence at Nelson Coleman Correctional Facility.
