New garbage collection service to begin May 1
Houma-based Pelican Waste & Debris will begin garbage collection for St. Charles Parish residents on May 1.
“The parish council and administration have worked hard on this contract and are ready to move forward with more efficient waste collection service for our residents,” said St. Charles Parish President Larry Cochran. “The new contract reflects what we have been working together toward: a price that stays the same, fully provides the services promised and puts customer service at the top of the priority list.
The St. Charles Parish Council unanimously the awarded the five-year garbage collection contract in November.
The company website states it is owned and operated by Roddie Matherne; Chris Lapeyre; Corey Callais, Nicholas Callais and Harold Callais.
Residents will pay the same rate as they are paying now – $16.69 a month per household. Of that total, $11.95 will be paid to the contractor with the difference covering landfill fees.
“We are working very hard to get ready for the May 1 start date,” said Pelican Waste General Manager Roddie Matherne “I want to assure the residents of St. Charles Parish that we care about providing them excellent service.”
All current garbage collection dates will remain the same.
Residents should put carts curbside, with the lids closed and the back facing the road to allow for the semi-automated trucks to safely and properly dispose of the trash.

The move came after numerous resident complaints about the current provider, Waste Connections, formerly Progressive Waste Service. Complaints focused on broken trucks for services gaps.
