Born and raised in Bayou Gauche, Robert Landry knows his home region — and he knows full well how popular boating and fishing is around those parts.
So, then, it makes perfect sense that Landry’s Des Allemands business, Landry’s Outboard Motors & Repair Service, has been thriving in the local community for the past 15 years.
The 15 years he’s spent running that business represents a little more than half of his 28 years experience repairing and fine-tuning outboard boat motors.
“After 13 years working at another store, I thought I’d go into it on my own,” Landry said. “I thought I could make a pretty good living at this and I was already involved. I’ve been here on the Bayou all my life … I used to do the mudboats. I like what I’m doing and I’m gonna keep at it.”
Landry said this is one of the busiest times of year for his business, as the weather heats up.
“Hunting season’s over with, so it’s time for everyone to fish,” Landry said with a chuckle.
Landry’s services and repairs Yamaha, Mercury, Evinrude and Johnson motors. Tasks performed at the shop include the installation and repair of steering, gauges, depth finders, troll motors, radios and bimini tops.
“We do rebuilt motors, we service motors and sell second-hand motors,” Landry said. “We’ll do a little painting, and we rig up the motors on the boat. And we try to get them out as fast as we can. We don’t want to hold up the customers and get them mad.”
Buffing and detailing packages are also available. Painting and decal work, Landry said, are among his favorite things to do.
“I like seeing how it all looks when I’m done with it,” Landry said.
He’s received plenty of good feedback over the years from his clients.
“I’ve been in boat shows and everyone always tells me, ‘you do some good work,’” Landry said. “It’s pretty satisfying to be able to have my business here, where I’m from, help out people you know and get them out on the water. It’s definitely a great place to have a business.”
