Homeless man gets 5 years after home invasion

Accused of breaking into Hahnville home while naked

A homeless man who was apparently naked when he attacked a Hahnville woman in her home in December has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Joseph Mitt, 56, pleaded guilty to a charge of home invasion on Jan. 24. The prison sentence was to be served immediately with credit for time served since his arrest.

As part of a plea deal, an additional charge of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling was dropped.

Mitt was accused of entering the victim’s Sunset Court home through an unlocked front door on Christmas Eve.

According to the arrest report, Mitt was naked and began yelling at the female victim incoherently as he pinned her against the wall, causing bruising.

The woman’s boyfriend and son pulled Mitt off her and he fled from the scene. Deputies found him about 100 yards away on Smith Street and placed him under arrest.
