Tigers eye 7th straight district title

Hahnville’s wrestling team eyes a seventh consecutive district championship this weekend at Destrehan, and HHS coach Dan Erwin says his competitors are indeed hungry to add that honor to the program’s growing list of achievements.

“They don’t want to be the first group to lose that district title,” Erwin said.

Hahnville is co-hosting the meet with rival Destrehan, and the two schools will compete with one another and Grace King, East Jefferson, Chalmette, Higgins and John Ehret for the crown.

“Each team has some good, quality wrestlers,” Erwin said. “I do feel like we’re the favorites, but there’s a lot talent across the board. We have four or five kids who are very good and hopefully we’ll perform well enough to win our seventh in a row.”

Erwin said this group has been together for a long time and that cohesion has delivered a consistently strong effort this season. The Tigers boast eight seniors this season.

“These kids do what is asked and never complain,” Erwin said. “They’re doing this at a high level. These guys have, for the most part, wrestled together since middle school. They’ve been together for a while and it’s showing.”

That could lead to a high finish at the upcoming LHSAA state wrestling tournament Feb. 12-13 in Bossier City.

“Nick (Lirette) should probably be the top seed in his class,” Erwin said. “Stephen (Cloud) and Trevon (Honor) should each be 2’s. We should be in a pretty good position.”

The Tigers placed third at Saturday’s Kettleson Memorial meet at St. Paul’s, finishing behind champion St. Paul’s and Brother Martin. Blake Rager and Nicholas Lirette each placed first in the 285 and 138 lb. weight classes. Stephen Cloud took second place at 220 lbs. and Robert Bryan took fourth at 120 lbs.

Two weeks ago, the Tigers had another impressive showing at the Louisiana Classic tournament. Lirette took first in the 138 class. Cloud took second at 220 lbs. Trevon Honor captured third place at 195 and Rager finished fifth at 285 lbs.
