Cooking Matters workshop

DESTREHAN - Karen Gardner, Community Nutrition Specialist with Second Harvest, will host “Cooking Matters at the Store” at 10 a.m. June 25 at Winn Dixie, 12519 Airline Hwy. in Destrehan. This free guided grocery store tour will cover finding healthy deals, reading nutrition labels, selecting fruits and vegetables in different forms, and identifying whole grains. Interactive nutrition workshop

DESTREHAN - The St. Charles Parish Library and Second Harvest Food Bank will hold a “Harvesting Health” interactive nutrition workshop at 10 a.m. June 23 at East Regional Library, 160 W. Campus Drive, Destrehan. A second session will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Paradis Branch, 307 Audubon St. The workshop will focus on reading nutrition labels and MyPlate, which provides information about the building blocks for a healthy diet. Karen Gardner, Community Nutrition Specialists with Second Harvest, will conduct the workshops. German Coast Farmers’ Market anniversary celebration

DESTREHAN – The German Farmers’ Market will hold its anniversary celebration 8 a.m. to noon June 20 at Ormond Plantation in Destrehan. Events will include a vegetable garden contest, music, bee and wood carving demonstrations, bunny petting zoo, St. Charles Parish Library display, door prizes and craft vendors. Sign up for the vegetable contest ends June 13. Entries are due by 9 a.m.

United Way book swap

LULING - United Way of St. Charles is hosting a children’s book swap on June 20 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the United Way office in Luling. UW is asking for donations of new or gently used children’s books appropriate for early childhood through fifth grade reading levels prior to the event. Book donations can be dropped off at the United Way of St. Charles office at 13207 River Road Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to noon, leading up to the event. Volunteers of all ages are needed to assist with the book swap. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Volunteer Coordinator Kelsey Matthews at (985) 331-9063 or kelseym@uwaysc.org.

Money to expand workforce

LAPLACE – The The River Region Chamber of Commerce will hold a Lunch & Learn Monday to Expand your Workforce session 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 19 at Chamber Resource Center, 394 Belle Terre Blvd., Laplace. The Louisiana Workforce Commission can provide wage reimbursement for on-the-job training to assist employers who want to hire additional workers. Zoning open house

HAHNVILLE - The St. Charles Parish Planning and Zoning Department will host an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 4 in the Courthouse Council Chambers, 15045 River Road, to discuss proposed changes to the parish’s zoning ordinance completed as part of Phase I of an ongoing modernization project.

Those interested in reviewing the proposed changes can download them from the news section of the parish website at www.stcharlesparish-la.gov/news beginning May 28. To view the current code, log on to www.stcharlesparish-la.gov and click on ‘Code of Ordinances.’ The zoning ordinance is labeled Appendix A.

Children’s Theater Workshop

RESERVE – The St. John Theatre presents its Children’s Theater Workshop from June 1 – 12, 2015 at the theater, 115 West 4th Street in Reserve. Director Greer M. Parade of Homes

PARISHWIDE – The 2015 Parade of Homes by the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans will be held 1 – 5 p.m. May 30-31 and 1 – 5 p.m. June 6-7. The tour includes St. Charles, Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemine, St. Bernard, St. John and St. James parishes. For a list of sites, visit www.home-builders.org/ParadeofHomes. The tour is free.

Kid Krewe du Market Parade
