Book sale slated for Oct. 17 and 18

HAHNVILLE - The Friends of the St. Charles Library will hold a used book sale on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Friends’ Book Nook adjacent to the Hahnville Library.

A large collection of books covering almost every category is available at low prices. Profits support the local library system.

Student heritage day set for Oct. 15

DESTREHAN - Kindergarten through third grade students of public, private, parochial and home schools can make a “heritage connection” at Destrehan Plantation’s Heritage Day Ocktoberfest on Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the manor grounds. Parish third graders can also attend Oct. 16.
The event is a hands-on experience for all kids with demonstrations on candle making, weaving, period dancing and so much more.

A Civil War encampment is on tap with the firing of cannons by the Slidell Battery. Others will be on hand to address Native American culture and archeology.

Admission is $5 for students and adults. Tours of the plantation are an additional $5.

HHS Class of 1988 holds class reunion

LULING - The Hahnville High School Class of 1988 will hold their 20th class reunion on Oct. 11 from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the River Room (old Esperanza) in Luling.

Firing range opens to public Oct. 11

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will open their firing range to the public for sighting rifles only on Oct. 11 and Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 4 p.m.

The Richard Benoit Memorial Firearms Range is located behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on Highway 3127 in Killona.

All shooters must check in with the range officer upon arrival. Shooting is on a first come first serve basis. Shooters should bring all equipment necessary including ammunition, eye and ear protection, paper targets and staples.

All shooters must sign a release and shoot only under the supervision of Sergeant Edward Adams.

No weapons are to be brought to the range in loaded condition and no one under the age of 17 is allowed to shoot without parental supervision.

Social Concerns seeks food items

LULING -The St. Charles Social Concerns is seeking nonperishable food.

The food pantry is running low on food items because of the increase in daily requests from the community.
Macaroni and cheese, grits, cereal, rice, canned vegetables, tomato sauce, potatoes, jelly, tuna, Vienna sausage, beef stew, Spam, juice, Jell-O, popcorn and crackers are among the items needed.

Items may be delivered to the St. Mark Catholic Church rectory daily from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

‘Future Prep Night’ at Hahnville High

BOUTTE - The annual “Future Prep Night” for St. Charles parish will be hosted by Hahnville High School on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This event is open to Destrehan and Hahnville seniors and juniors and their parents.

Representatives from all Louisiana public and private colleges and universities have been invited to participate, as well as a number of community colleges, vocational-technical schools, and proprietary schools. All branches of the military service have also been invited. Additionally, a representative from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (T.O.P.S.) will attend.

Deadline for art grants Oct. 4

The River Region Arts and Humanities Council is accepting applications for grants for art projects through Oct. 4.
Residents and groups in St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes are eligible to apply for grants to be used in the development of arts and humanities projects or activities or projects in theater, dance, music and the visual arts.

Grants will not exceed $1,500 per application.

Local church holds craft sale auction

DES ALLEMANDS - A craft sale and auction will be held at the Father Mac Community Center in Des Allemands on Oct. 4.
The craft sale is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the auction following from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A choice of jambalaya or gumbo will be served for lunch along with baked goods, crafts and woodwork.
All proceeds benefit the Pine Lake Fellowship Camp.

‘78 and ‘79 grads celebrate 30 years

BOUTTE - Graduates of the Hahnville High School classes of 1978 and 1979 are invited to join their classmates at the Friday, Oct. 3 HHS homecoming game.

Kick-Off is set for 7 p.m. after the homecoming court festivities at 6 p.m.

A gathering tent will be set up outside the gate prior to game time.

Information will be handed out in regard to a reunion cruise and the 1978's class reunion in September 2009.
Attendees will be responsible for the cost of your own game ticket.

After the game graduates are invited to a party at Sydnie’s Pub and Grill located at 13894 Highway 90 in Boutte. It will be a cash bar!
