Local church holds craft sale auction

DES ALLEMANDS - A craft sale and auction will be held at the Father Mac Community Center in Des Allemands on Oct. 4.
The craft sale is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the auction following from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A choice of jambalaya or gumbo will be served for lunch along with baked goods, crafts and woodwork.
All proceeds benefit the Pine Lake Fellowship Camp.Read More...

‘78 and ‘79 grads celebrate 30 years

BOUTTE - Graduates of the Hahnville High School classes of 1978 and 1979 are invited to join their classmates at the Friday, Oct. 3 HHS homecoming game.

Kick-Off is set for 7 p.m. after the homecoming court festivities at 6 p.m.

A gathering tent will be set up outside the gate prior to game time.

Information will be handed out in regard to a reunion cruise and the 1978's class reunion in September 2009.
Attendees will be responsible for the cost of your own game ticket.

After the game graduates are invited to a party at Sydnie’s Pub and Grill located at 13894 Highway 90 in Boutte. It will be a cash bar!

Come out to support your alma mater and visit with your classmates.

HAHNVILLE - The Fashion Golf course in Hahnville reopened after Hurricane Gustav on Sept. 8 and is offering a winter special to all golfers.

For $20, a golfer gets a cart and can play 18 holes, and for $25, a golfer can play all day - cart included.
The course is open seven days a week. No tee times are required.

Battle for the Paddle gets underway on Oct. 2

LULING - The call is out for gumbo and jambalaya cooks.
The seventh annual United Way of St. Charles Battle for the Paddle cook-off will be held Oct. 2 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the West Bank Bridge Park on River Road in Luling.

The Battle for the Paddle features a cook-off in two divisions, gumbo and jambalaya. Teams cook their own special recipes on site and serve the results to the public. Admission is $5 for the all-you-can-eat extravaganza. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Music and a Pick 5 raffle will also be featured during the event.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each division, including the coveted grand prize, an engraved wooden paddle.

The registration deadline is Sept. 26. The cost is $50 per team.

Slow-cooking seminar at Destrehan Plantation

DESTREHAN - Destrehan Plantation will present its first culinary seminar on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entitled “Slow and Low, Then and Now,” the seminar presents the art of slow cooking with open hearth cooking and with electric slow cookers.

Dr. Martin “Doc” Spindel will present the seminar followed by a cooking demonstration by Michael Ledet, author of the “Joe Simmer” series of cookbooks.

Cookbooks will be on sale and lunch will be served.
Advance tickets are available for $25. This includes the seminar, lunch and a tour of the plantation.

Fun-filled festival weekend

LULING - The 29th Annual Alligator Festival is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 25 at the West Bank Bridge Park on River Road in Luling.

This year’s event, which is sponsored by the parish’s rotary club, will feature local food delicacies such as alligator burgers, jambalaya, softshell crabs and other Cajun dishes.

Rides, games, live bands, souvenirs and local crafts are also on the line up for this weekend’s festivities.
The list of musical performers includes Bag of Donuts, Local Option 2, Full Circle, The Wise Guys, LA Kids, Allen Fontenot & the Country Cajuns, Waylon Thibodeaux and The Topcats.

40 years of art in St. Charles Parish

Co-ed softball benefit Sept. 20

DES ALLEMANDS - Michael A. Rembert Sr. was diagnosed with multiple myeloma - an incurable, but treatable blood plasma cancer. Because he is undergoing a bone marrow transplant, he is unable to work and is now uninsured.

In an effort to help Rembert and his family with some medical expenses, residents are forming a co-ed softball benefit in Des Allemands on Sept. 6. The entry fee per team is $150. Ages 15 and up are able to participate.

Food, raffles and music will also be available.
