Firing range opens to public Oct. 11

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will open their firing range to the public for sighting rifles only on Oct. 11 and Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 4 p.m.

The Richard Benoit Memorial Firearms Range is located behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on Highway 3127 in Killona.

All shooters must check in with range officer upon arrival. Shooting is on a first come first serve basis. Shooters should bring all equipment necessary including ammunition, eye and ear protection, paper targets and staples.

All shooters must sign a release and shoot only under the supervision of Sergeant Edward Adams.

No weapons are to brought to the range in loaded condition and no one under the age of 17 is allowed to shoot without parental supervision.

Farmer’s market Ocktoberfest

DESTREHAN - The Ocktoberfest of the German Coast Farmers' Market will be celebrated every Saturday in October at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan from 8 a.m. until noon.

As part of the celebration, a "Pass Along" plant exchange will be held on Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. with the exchange at 11 a.m.

Everyone is encouraged to participate by bringing a well-established, healthy specimen in a one-half gallon or larger container.

The botanical or pet name of the plant should be included, along with simple instructions for care.

HHS drama troupe performs classic

BOUTTE -Hahnville High School’s newly chartered International Thespian Society will transport audiences to the world of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the classic comedy of would-be lovers and “want to be” actors lost in the woods amidst a magical, dream-like world of mischievous fairies and their meddling schemes.

The play will be presented Oct. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., all in the newly renovated HHS Auditorium.

Admission is $5.

Student heritage day set for Oct. 15

DESTREHAN - Kindergarten through third grade students of public, private, parochial and home schools can make a “heritage connection” at Destrehan Plantation’s Heritage Day Ocktoberfest on Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the manor grounds. Parish third graders can also attend Oct. 16.
The event is a hands-on experience for all kids with demonstrations on candle making, weaving, period dancing and so much more.

A Civil War encampment is on tap with the firing of cannons by the Slidell Battery. Others will be on hand to address Native American culture and archeology.

Admission is $5 for students and adults. Tours of the plantation are an additional $5.

LULING -The St. Charles Social Concerns is seeking nonperishable food.

The food pantry is running low on food items because of the increase in daily requests from the community.
Macaroni and cheese, grits, cereal, rice, canned vegetables, tomato sauce, potatoes, jelly, tuna, Vienna sausage, beef stew, Spam, juice, Jell-O, popcorn and crackers are among the items needed.
