River Region Ballet holds auditions

DESTREHAN - The River Region Ballet will hold auditions for Company and Junior Company members for their 2008-09 season on Saturday May 10 at Images Dance Studio located at 105-A River Point Dr. in Destrehan.

Intermediate dancer auditions for Junior Company (ages 10 and older) will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Intermediate/advanced dancer audtiions for Company (ages 13 and older) will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Female dancers must perform on Pointe and all auditions must bring a resume. Talented dancers with dedication and the desire to perform are urged to audition.

The St. Charles Parish Community Band holds free concert at HHS

BOUTTE - The St. Charles Community Band will perform a free concert on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hahnville High School auditorium.

Musical selections will include a John Philip Sousa march, musical selections from the movie Chicago, highlights from the Broadway hit Fiddler on the Roof, as well as a Dixieland arrangement combining Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus with When the Saints Go Marching In.

The St. Charles Community Band, directed by David Rosenthal, is made up of mostly adult members from both the East and West Banks of St. Charles Parish as well as a few musicians from neighboring parishes and several high school musicians from the Hahnville and Destrehan Bands.Read More...

Residents urged to collect recyclables

Curbside recycling went by the wayside in St. Charles Parish after Hurricane Katrina, but parish residents still have the chance to turn in recyclable materials during bi-monthly drop-off events through the end of the year.

The next event, conducted by the Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on May 3 at the St. Charles Plaza on Highway 90 and at the Allen Arterbury Building on River Road in New Sarpy.

Recycling is free to the public and no parish funds are used to conduct the drop off.

Parish officials are seeking volunteers for the drop-off events. Interested persons can call 985-783-5000 to sign up.

River Region Arts & Humanities Council holds Denim & Diamonds fundraiser May 3

Get ready to raise that bid with hand painted fans designed by Destrehan High school seniors Skye Jenkins and Johnna Hurd, talented art students. The cowboy hat "bidding" fans will be used during the auction at the River Region Arts & Humanities Council fundraiser, Denim & Diamonds, May 3 at the Destrehan Plantation Mule Barn on River Road in Destrehan beginning at 6:30 p.m.

So, shine up your belt buckles, bolas and boots. Dust off your finest cowboy hats and blue-jean jackets and get ready to party for a cause.

Thanks to the supportive residents of the area, the River Region Arts & Humanities Council has raised over $250,000 since 2001 to support arts and humanities enrichment in the area.

Under the direction of event chair, Sandra Chaisson, a fun-filled evening is planned. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers, a signature drink the Bourbon Spur and music by Gal Holiday, a western swing rockabilly headliner. A chuck wagon style dinner will be served at 7:45 p.m. followed by a live auction, raffles, door prizes and more music.

You won't want to miss the opportunity to raise your "fan" during the auction featuring custom-made chandeliers, cowboy hats decorated by local "quick draw"artists (hats will be judged by Yvonne LaFleur), a condo stay in Aspen, Colorado including airfare for two and transportation from the airport to the condo, a portrait sitting worth over $2,400, a trip to the Kentucky Derby, a hat donated by Yvonne LaFleur suitable for wearing at the Derby, themed baskets and other exciting items. There will also be a "wagon train" of prizes and a raffle for a Coach purse valued at almost $500.

Adult day care seeks local talent for annual summer variety show

Norco Adult Day Care is planning its 16th annual Summer Variety show to be held at Sacred Heart School Auditorium in Norco.

Special emphasis is on local talent - students and adults who would like free public exposure.

Honored guests will be the clients of Norco Adult Day Care, and the public is invited to attend.

The date for the show is July 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in donating their time is asked to call Kathy at 985-764-7223.

The variety show is the annual fund raiser for Norco Adult Day Care. Tickets for the show will be on sale at the center, which is located at 425 Spruce St. or from staff and volunteers at Norco Adult Day Care.

Tickets are $2 each. Door prizes will also be given away at intermission.

Winners of door prizes do not have to present to collect their prize. Refreshments will also be available.

Courthouse hosts national prayer day

HAHNVILLE - St. Charles Parish participants will commemorate 2008's National Day of Prayer from noon to 1 p.m. May 1 at the Courthouse at 15045 River Road.
Ceremony coordinator Brenda Chiasson of the West St. Charles Baptist Church in Boutte invites the public to attend.

Chiasson is inviting pastors from area churches to speak about the virtues of prayer. Other guest speakers will include members of law enforcement, EMTs and St. Charles Parish Hospital officials. Parish President V.J. St. Pierre, Jr. will introduce the ceremony with a prayer.
Congress designated the National Day of Prayer in 1952 as a time for all Americans, regardless of faith, to come together and pray in their own way. In 1988 President Ronald Reagan signed a bill calling for the observance every first Thursday of May. The National Day of Prayer Task Force, based in Colorado, organizes many observances around the country.

Senior groups hosts hurricane conference

LULING - The St. Charles Parish Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will host a Hurricane Conference for senior citizens at 10 a.m. May 1 at the VFW Hall, 140 Angus Drive in Luling.

The conference will focus on what seniors need to know to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, RSVP Director Fay Caire said.

Presenters will include the St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center, the St. Charles Sheriff's Department, local fire departments and the Department of Animal Control. A light lunch will be provided.
