LULING - St. Charles Parish Public Schools is offering a variety of different community education classes this spring, ranging from art and dance to finance and writing.
But the deadline to sign up is March 1 so residents need to act quickly in order to learn a new skill this spring. There are many new class offerings this semester including classes for those of all ages.
If you did not receive your brochure in the mail, you can pick one up at your local library or view the schools’ web site at www.stcharles.k12.la.us.
Registrations are accepted by mail and fax. All registrations must be accompanied by full tuition payment. Payment may be made by cash, money orders, checks or credit cards. Visa and Master Card are accepted. Checks and money orders should be made payable to St. Charles Parish Public Schools.

|Lenten mission 2013

LULING - The Notre Dame Seminary will hold a three-day long Lenten Mission Feb. 18-21 with the theme of “The year of faith and the new evangelism.” Activities will take place each day with confessions from 6:20-6:50 p.m. and mass beginning at 7 p.m.
On Feb. 19 the subject will be “The New Evangelization: Implications for Parish Life”, which will examine Pope Benedict XVI’s call to the entire Church to embrace the new evangelization. The new evangelization and implications for each believer will be explained.
On Feb. 20 the subject will be “The New Evangelization and the Christian Family,” which will examine the family as the domestic church - where each believer nurtures their faith and is formed by family.
On Feb. 21 the subject will be “The New Evangelization and Authentic Conversion,” which focuses on the gifts bestowed on each disciple. Father Wehner will reflect on how the gifts of the Holy Spirit equip each person to not only become the person that God has created us to be but then how conversion to Christ impels them to be proclaimers of the Gospel.
The events will be held at the Holy Family Church located at 155 Holy Family Lane in Luling.
|Cheer and Hi-Stepper informational meeting

HAHNVILLE - A cheer informational meeting will be held in the Hahnville High School auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.
A Hi-Stepper informational meeting will also be held at 7 p.m.
Parents must be present for this meeting in order for a student to try out.
All paper work will be discussed and handed out at this meeting for tryouts.
The informational meetings will be held in the Hahnville High School auditorium located at 200 Tiger Drive in Boutte.
|Hahnville Lions Club seeking applicants for free special needs summer camp

HAHNVILLE - The Hahnville Lions Club is seeking applicants for a free summer camp to be held for special needs children from all over the state.
The Louisiana Lions Camp is located North of Leesville and will open Sunday, June 2.
There will be a one-week session for youth with pulmonary disorders, two one-week sessions for the mild mentally challenged ages 8-19, two one-week sessions for youth with diabetes ages 6-14 and two one-week sessions for visual, hearing and orthopedically impaired youth ages 7-19.
There is no cost to the parents for the campers’ stay. All requests for summer camp are handled by local Lions’ Clubs and each applicant requires Lion sponsorship.

|Anti-violence meeting to be held in St. Rose

ST. ROSE - Active Action is holding a meeting on Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. The group is looking for people who want to help put an end the violence in St. Charles.

|Remembering Fenisha Charles

DESTREHAN - Alpha Daughters of Zion will honor the memory of the late Fenisha Charles at their annual fundraiser banquet on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Jerusalem Shrine Center located at 1940 Ormond Blvd. in Destrehan from 6-9 p.m. Tickets for the event cost $25.
Fenisha Charles was an educator in St. Charles Parish. She taught at Norco Elementary, Harry Hurst Middle School and R. K. Smith Middle School. Fenisha was a victim of domestic violence.

|St. Rose Volunteer Fire Department giving out free smoke detectors

St. ROSE - The Saint Rose Volunteer Fire Department is currently issuing and installing smoke detectors free of charge to all residents in the 5th Fire District in St. Rose.

NORCO - Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church is holding its annual men’s day on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.

|Stargaze with Big Bird at Planetarium

DES ALLEMANDS - The Luling Branch Library is holding a film showing of “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure.” The story introduces young children to the wonders of stargazing with Big Bird and Elmo as their guide. They will join Elmo and his friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, on an imaginary trip to the Moon and learn how it differs from our home, the Earth.
The approximate show length is 30 minutes and will begin at 10 a.m. on Jan. 26.
Doors open 15 minutes prior to the scheduled showtime. Due to the unusual lighting conditions in the planetarium, no one is allowed to enter once the show has started.
The Luling Branch Library is located at 105 Lakewood Drive in Luling.

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church will hold a dance Saturday, Jan. 26 beginning at 8 p.m. Cost for entry is $15. Music by “Party of Two” and attendees must bring their own alcohol.

LULING - The St. Charles Parish Tennis Program will provide a free clinic on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Monsanto Tennis Facility.
The event is open to adults and mature teens and will focus on how to conduct team practices for Junior Team Tennis.
No registration is required and anyone interested in Junior Tennis is invited to attend. No previous tennis experience is required.

LULING - The Luling Library will hold an adult craft workshop on Friday, Jan. 25 from 10:30 a.m. - noon.
The workshop is the first in a series of monthly craft programs aimed at adults.
Participants will construct bags from T-shirts. Library officials say the bags are good for carrying library books, groceries or even Mardi Gras beads you’ll be catching during carnival season. Materials will be provided.

LULING - The Basketry will hold a book signing for former school board member and local author Steve Crovetto.
Crovetto’s book, “The Parade,” details his experience as a child witnessing the formation of a West Bank parade krewe.
