Co-ed softball benefit Sept. 20

DES ALLEMANDS - Michael A. Rembert Sr. was diagnosed with multiple myeloma - an incurable, but treatable blood plasma cancer. Because he is undergoing a bone marrow transplant, he is unable to work and is now uninsured.

In an effort to help Rembert and his family with some medical expenses, residents are forming a co-ed softball benefit in Des Allemands on Sept. 6. The entry fee per team is $150. Ages 15 and up are able to participate.

Food, raffles and music will also be available.

Donations are also being accepted in Rembert’s name at any Regions Bank.

NORCO - The River Region Ballet will hold auditions for this year’s performance of the Nutcracker on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center located at 15146 River Road in Norco.

Auditions for acting roles boys and girls ages 7 to 10 is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is an audition fee of $10.

All dancers must sign 30 minutes prior to audition time.
Intermediate and advanced dancers who are interested in becoming a member of the ballet’s company or junior company may call the artistic director to schedule auditions.

Junior company members must be 10-years-old before Dec. 31 and dance at an intermediate level. Company members must be 13-years-old and female dancers must dance on pointe at an intermediate or advanced level.

Local baseball team hosts dance

LULING - The Louisiana Heat, a 12-year-old baseball team, is sponsoring a dance at the VFW Hall in Luling on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to midnight.

The team is using the dance as a fundraiser to raise money to defray costs for a trip to Cooperstown, NY in July 2009.

The dance will feature music by Local Option II. Tickets are $20. Cost includes finger foods and setups. Bring your own liquor.

Rotary club holds annual golf match

LULING - The Rotary Club of St. Charles will hold its annual Alligator Classic golf tournament Sept. 12 at Willowdale Country Club in Luling.

Proceeds will benefit the club's college scholarship fund for local students.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon.

The format is a four-person scramble. Lunch will be served.
The entry fee is $90 per golfer and covers food and drinks, green fees, an Alligator Festival shirt, towel and ditty bag.

Prizes will be awarded for first-, second-, and third-place finishes as well as closest to the hole and longest drive.
Hole sponsorship is needed.

Empowerment workshop gears up

HAHNVILLE - It's time! Time to make that change, and the Empowerment Workshop "Tapping Into Untapped Potential" is the place to begin again. These four uniquely designed classes have been specifically created for women to unleash the creative force within them in order to change the world around them. The classes will be held at Hahnville High School, 200 Tiger Drive, which is located off of Highway 90 in Boutte.

The sessions will be held every Thursday in the month of October. Tuition is only $45 made payable to St. Charles Parish Public Schools. A supply fee of $3.00 cash will be paid to the instructor.

Parish art guild begins new year

LULING - The St. Charles Art Guild will begin its club year Sept. 2.

The meeting will be held at First Union Presbyterian Church on Lakewood Drive in Luling. A coffee social begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting at 10 a.m.

Jan Wilken of Harahan will speak at 11 a.m. She will demonstrate how to create textures in watercolor paintings.
The organization’s first workshop, Basics of Landscape Painting, will be held on Oct. 22 through 24 at Destrehan Plantation with Phil Sandusky as workshop instructor.

Class registration ends Sept. 2

The last day to register for community education classes is scheduled for Aug. 31, but because the deadline of falls on a Sunday, registration for classes will be accepted in the office until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Pre-registration is required for all classes. If you do not have the current Fall 2008 brochure, you can pick up one at your local library or the front lobby of the School Board Office. Class information is also available on the St. Charles Parish Public Schools web site at www.stcharles.k12.la.us – under quick links choose Community, then the Community Education link for the most current information on classes.

Registration and tuition may be delivered to the main reception desk at the School Board Central Office at 13855 River Road – Luling during business hours, or deposited in the secure after-hours drop box located on the left hand side entrance of the building.

Free Alpha course at Boutte church

BOUTTE - Boutte Assembly of God will begin the alpha course on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Boutte Christian Academy.

This 10-week practical introduction to the Christian faith offers answers to some key questions.
