In a back and forth battle that epitomized the word “rivalry,” Hahnville out dueled Destrehan in overtime to claim a 47-44 victory that kept the district champion Tigers perfect in league play with a 5-0 record.

Late last week an east wind howled over Lake Salvador, but that did not stop Luling angler Bruce McDonald, his fishing buddy Andre Cambre and I from landing multiple species of fish - including more than 50 speckled trout - on an afternoon fishing trip.

There was no doubt it was a "must" win for the New Orleans Saints. A 1-5 start would all but eliminate them from any talk of making a run to get to the .500 mark in 2012 and it took every ounce of football strength for the team to pull out a 35-28 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Hahnville High School boys cross country team, who began the season with three straight wins, was unable to restart their winning streak at the Tarpon Invitational held on Oct. 17.

All season long, Destrehan has been a strong football team in the second half, but the Wildcats failed to hang on to a 34-21 lead with only six minutes left in a stunning loss to East St. John last week.

With just under seven minutes left in the game and his team already up by a touchdown, Destrehan junior cornerback Denzel Arceneaux fielded a squib kickoff, cut left and raced 68 yards down the field to put the Wildcats up 31-24 with 6:44 left in the game.

After getting swamped in Gainesville 14-6 by the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers were backed up against the football wall facing an unbeaten South Carolina team that played the best game of the Steve Spurrier-era defeating Georgia 35-7.
