After weeks of speculation on the potential rise in flood insurance rates, St. Charles Parish Public Schools launched their own inquiry on how increased flood insurance premiums will affect their properties and have come back with positive findings.

Even though parish property was reassessed only last year, West Bank residents may see lower property tax rates as early as July 31 if a reassessment goes through following a FEMA flood remap that may mean some have to pay tens of thousands of dollars more per year in flood insurance rates.

The St. Charles Herald-Guide was named Newspaper of the Year by the Louisiana Press Association for the paper’s work in 2012. Overall, the Herald-Guide took home 14 awards including General Excellence, Best Sports Coverage and Best Front Page.

The No. 9 Hahnville Tigers (25-7) completed a season sweep of Destrehan with a 3-0 win on Tuesday to clinch the District 8-5A title.
