METAIRIE - The Friends of the Jefferson Public Library’s semi-annual book sale will be held on Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
As always, admission and parking are free.

|Farmer’s market plans to ‘pawty’

DESTREHAN - Make plans "to pawty" with the German Coast Farmer’s Market on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.
Costume your pets in holiday garb, and show them off as everyone parades through the market area. Carriages or wagons are allowed.
Prizes will be awarded for the best presentation of pet. Entrance fee is $5.
Register at the Welcome Booth during the Wednesday or Saturday markets held before the celebration, or sign up that morning at 9 a.m. at the Pawrade Registration Table.

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands will be hosting a St. Josephs Altar on Saturday, March 15 following the 10 a.m. mass. Blessing and viewing of the altar will be immediately following the mass until 4 p.m. Food will be served. Everyone is invited to attend.
|Special-needs kids free summer camp available

HAHNVILLE -Applications for a summer vacation full of fun for special needs youth in the St. Charles Parish area are now being accepted by members of the Hahnville Lions Club.
The Louisiana Lions Camp is located north of Leesville and will open Sunday, June 1.
There will be a one week session for youth with pulmonary disorders, two one-week sessions for the mild mentally challenged ages 8 to 19, two one-week sessions for visual, hearing and orthopedically impaired youth ages 7 to 19.
There is no cost to the parents for the camper’s stay. All request for the camp are handled locally by Lions.

NORCO - A benefit bingo will be held at the American Legion Hall located at 426 Clayton Dr. in Norco on March 15. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.

BATON ROUGE - A half-hour TV documentary, “Louisiana’s Lucky Clover: A Century of 4-H” will be broadcast for the first time on Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) and its affiliate stations on March 12 at 7:40 p.m.
Produced by the LSU AgCenter, the documentary tracks the formation and development of this youth organization from the first “corn club” in Avoyelles Parish in 1908 to today’s vast network of clubs and projects across that state that involved about 225,000 young people in 2007.

KENNER - One of the funniest plays ever written is on stage at the Rivertown Repertory Theatre located at 325 Minor St. in Kenner’s Rivertown District.
The play will run through March 9 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

|Drama guild holds auditions for show

NORCO - The River Region Drama Guild invites actors, actresses, dancers and singers to “Be Our Guest” at the March 8 and 9 auditions for Beauty and the Beast.
Auditions will be held at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center located at 15146 River Road in Norco. March 8 auditions are promptly from 1 to 5 p.m. and March 9 is reserved for callbacks from 6 to 9 p.m.

|Women’s club to award three scholarships

LULING - The St. Charles Women’s Club is awarding three scholarships to graduating seniors who reside in St. Charles Parish.
Two academic awards - one for $4,000 and one for $1,000 - will be given to a high school graduate who plans to attend 4-year universities. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend a vocational school or towards an associate’s degree.
Applications may be obtained from the senior counselors at Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools.
Students who attend private schools may call 985-764-9762 to set up a time to pick up an application.
Deadline for all applications is Feb. 28.

BOUTTE - There will be an informational meeting about cheerleading and mascot tryouts for the 2008-09 school year on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Hahnville High School auditorium.

LULING - The Bible Center Church at 422 Barton Ave. will host a Memorial Blood Drive on Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in honor of the late Kyle Price Bergeron who passed away from Leukemia Dec. 30, 2006 at the age of 18.
If you have been deferred from donating blood in the past you may be eligible to donate at this time since the deferred criteria has changed considerably.

|Learn the history of Creole homes at Destrehan library

DESTREHAN - John H. Lawrence, Director of Museum Programs for the Historic New Orleans Collection, will give a visual presentation based on the book Creole Houses: Traditional Homes of Old Louisiana at the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library on February 23 at 2:00 p.m. The library is located at 100 River Oaks Dr. in Destrehan.
Creole Houses was selected as one of the top nonfiction works of 2007 by Times-Picayune book editor Susan Larson. In the book, Lawrence provides written commentary for the photographs taken by Steve Gross and Sue Daley.
Creole houses are found throughout Louisiana and are a blend of French and Spanish colonial styles with West Indian, African, and Native American influences.
Appreciation of Creole culture will be heightened as Lawrence presents in-depth information about the architectural design and interior decoration of the houses as well as the society that produced them.
The program will last approximately 45 minutes and includes a brief overview of the book's contents along with more detailed looks at a few of the buildings featured in the book.
A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Books will not be available for purchase at the event, but Lawrence will be available to sign any books that were purchased in advance.
