Satellite Center hosts food drive

Empty Bowls, an event where all proceeds are given to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans, will be held March 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Satellite Center Banquet Room.

The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Students from St. Charles Parish Public Schools create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for a meal and the bowl, all guests donate $10 per person for a ticket to the event. Tickets are available at the door.

Blue Man Group to perform in Big Easy

NEW ORLEANS - The beat goes on as the Blue Man Group descends on New Orleans for its mega-successful How to be a Megastar 2.1 which will take place on Tuesday, March 18 at the New Orleans Arena at 7:30 p.m.

K’garten registration set for March 17-20

St. Charles Parish Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration March 17 through 20 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Parents must register their children at the school in their attendance area.

Schools are: Allemands Elementary - 985-758-7427, Luling Elementary - 985-785-6086, A.A. Songy Kindergarten - 985-785-0299, New Sarpy Elementary - 985-725-1429, Norco Elementary K-3 - 985-764-2787 and St. Rose Elementary - 504-464-9254.

Parents or guardians should bring to registration: certified birth certificate for child, home address, mailing address and telephone number, proof of residency (two utility bills showing physical address. i.e. gas, water, electricity), social security card for the child and immunization record for the child.

Book sale at libraries in Jefferson Parish

METAIRIE - The Friends of the Jefferson Public Library’s semi-annual book sale will be held on Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

As always, admission and parking are free.

Farmer’s market plans to ‘pawty’

DESTREHAN - Make plans "to pawty" with the German Coast Farmer’s Market on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.

Costume your pets in holiday garb, and show them off as everyone parades through the market area. Carriages or wagons are allowed.

Prizes will be awarded for the best presentation of pet. Entrance fee is $5.

Register at the Welcome Booth during the Wednesday or Saturday markets held before the celebration, or sign up that morning at 9 a.m. at the Pawrade Registration Table.

Catholic church hosts St. Joseph Altar

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands will be hosting a St. Josephs Altar on Saturday, March 15 following the 10 a.m. mass. Blessing and viewing of the altar will be immediately following the mass until 4 p.m. Food will be served. Everyone is invited to attend.

Special-needs kids free summer camp available

HAHNVILLE -Applications for a summer vacation full of fun for special needs youth in the St. Charles Parish area are now being accepted by members of the Hahnville Lions Club.
The Louisiana Lions Camp is located north of Leesville and will open Sunday, June 1.

There will be a one week session for youth with pulmonary disorders, two one-week sessions for the mild mentally challenged ages 8 to 19, two one-week sessions for visual, hearing and orthopedically impaired youth ages 7 to 19.
There is no cost to the parents for the camper’s stay. All request for the camp are handled locally by Lions.

Have fun, help cancer society with BINGO

NORCO - A benefit bingo will be held at the American Legion Hall located at 426 Clayton Dr. in Norco on March 15. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with bingo at 7 p.m.

4-H documentary airs on Louisiana channel

BATON ROUGE - A half-hour TV documentary, “Louisiana’s Lucky Clover: A Century of 4-H” will be broadcast for the first time on Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) and its affiliate stations on March 12 at 7:40 p.m.

Produced by the LSU AgCenter, the documentary tracks the formation and development of this youth organization from the first “corn club” in Avoyelles Parish in 1908 to today’s vast network of clubs and projects across that state that involved about 225,000 young people in 2007.

Learn healthy eating with Laurie Acosta

‘A Flea in Her Ear’ is on stage in Kenner

KENNER - One of the funniest plays ever written is on stage at the Rivertown Repertory Theatre located at 325 Minor St. in Kenner’s Rivertown District.

The play will run through March 9 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors (55 and up) and students and $10 for children (6 to 12). Drama guild holds auditions for show

NORCO - The River Region Drama Guild invites actors, actresses, dancers and singers to “Be Our Guest” at the March 8 and 9 auditions for Beauty and the Beast.

Auditions will be held at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center located at 15146 River Road in Norco. March 8 auditions are promptly from 1 to 5 p.m. and March 9 is reserved for callbacks from 6 to 9 p.m.

Those auditioning must be ten years of age and older. Everyone is asked to bring a song to sing in the proper key; an accompianist is provided

Women’s club to award three scholarships

LULING - The St. Charles Women’s Club is awarding three scholarships to graduating seniors who reside in St. Charles Parish.

Two academic awards - one for $4,000 and one for $1,000 - will be given to a high school graduate who plans to attend 4-year universities. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend a vocational school or towards an associate’s degree.

Applications may be obtained from the senior counselors at Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools.

Students who attend private schools may call 985-764-9762 to set up a time to pick up an application.

Deadline for all applications is Feb. 28.

HHS cheerleader & mascot tryouts

BOUTTE - There will be an informational meeting about cheerleading and mascot tryouts for the 2008-09 school year on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Hahnville High School auditorium.

Those interested in trying out who are unable to attend the meeting should contact Ms. Candice Reed at creed@stcharles.k12.la.us after the meeting to obtain a packet of tryout information.

A mandatory instructional workshop will be held on April 7 through 10 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the school gym.
