Festival of Charities holds pageants and butterfly extravaganza

DESTREHAN - The Festival of Charity, Inc. will hold its annual pageants and butterfly extravaganza on Sunday, April 11 at Ormond Plantation in Destrehan. The theme this year is “Beauties in Bloom.”

Pageant contestants can register at the door 30 minutes prior to each division. There will be pageant divisions for baby and youth boys ages 0-18 months and 18-36 months, and baby and youth girls ages 0-7 months, 8-14 months, 15-23 months, 2-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-7 years and 8-9 years. All divisions accept special children as princes and
princesses. There will also be a pageant for junior, teen and miss divisions for girls ages 10-12 years old who are Louisiana residents, have never been married or conceived a child.

French Quarter Fest free music

NEW ORLEANS - The free three-day French Quarter Festival will take place from April 9-11 throughout the French Quarter and will feature over 250 hours of free music across 18 stages.

The festival also features the “World’s Largest Jazz Brunch,” which are the festival food booths operated by nearly 60 local chefs and restaurants each day.

Botanical Garden Show at City Park

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans 2010 Spring Garden Show will be at the City Park Botanical Garden April 10-11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.

“This is always a fun event featuring garden product exhibits and sales throughout the garden,” said Brent Jeansonne, the LSU AgCenter horticulture agent in Jefferson Parish. “We have a great lineup of educational speakers.”

Master Gardeners and LSU AgCenter horticulture experts will be available to answer questions from homeowners, who also may bring soil samples for analysis by the LSU AgCenter’s Soil Testing Lab. The cost for each one-pint soil sample is $10, payable by check or money order.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. Children under 5 and members of Friends of City Park may enter for free.

Farmers’ Market fruit tasting, book sale

DESTREHAN - Saturday, April 10, the east bank location of the German Coast Farmers’ Market, at Ormond Plantation, will feature a representative from the St. Charles Parish Library who will discuss library programs, sell an assortment of used books, and give away free gifts.

Deniese Zeringue will also be on hand for “Taste of the Season,” sponsored by the LSU Cooperative Extension Service, to promote healthy eating and the tasting of fruits & vegetables that are in season. Arts and crafts will also be featured. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon.

Tet Dur band plays at St. Gertrude dance

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands will hold a dance on Saturday, April 10 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Father Mac Community Center. Music will be performed by “Tet Dur” and the cost is $15 per couple.

United Way hosts 5k bridge run/walk

ST. CHARLES PARISH - United Way of St. Charles is hosting their 14th Annual 5K Bridge Run/Walk and Festival on Saturday, April 10, presented by Motiva Enterprises and Valero St. Charles Refinery.

The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at the East Bank Bridge Park in Destrehan and crosses the Hale Boggs Bridge to the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling. Winners of the 5K Bridge Run will receive a combined prize purse of $5,000 and custom race medallions.

Pre-registration is available for $25 per person until April 2. After April 2, race registration is $30 per person.

To register for the race, visit www.uwaysc.org or register in person at the United Way office, 13207 River Road in Luling. On-site registration is also available Friday, April 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bridge Park in Luling and on race day, Saturday, April 10, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Bridge Park in Destrehan.

Kindergarten registration begins soon

Kindergarten registration for St. Charles Parish Schools will be April 6-9. Children who register should be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2010. It is not necessary that the child be present at registration. Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Please register your child at the school in your attendance area:

HHS 8th grade scheduling

HAHNVILLE - Hahnville High School 8th Grade scheduling meetings will be held on Tuesday, April 6th and Wednesday, April 7th.

On Tuesday, April 6th, the scheduling meeting will be held for J. B. Martin students with last names beginning with A-R and on Wednesday, April 7th for J. B. Martin students with last names beginning with S-Z and R. K. Smith students.

Both meetings will be at Hahnville High School in the auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m.

All 8th grade students who are planning to attend Hahnville High School and at least one parent or guardian are requested to attend the meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting scheduled for the school the student attends, you may attend the other meeting to hear the information being discussed.

Norco Knights of Columbus fish fry

NORCO - The Knights of Columbus Lenten fish fries are here again!

Red Church Council #3634 Knights of Columbus will be serving a “Louisiana” catfish dinner at the church hall at 375 Spruce Street in Norco each Friday during Lent - Feb. 19 through April 2 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

The dinner is $7 and includes catfish fillets, french fries, hush puppies, cole slaw and cake squares.

A fried “onion mum” with dipping sauce will be available for $5.

Soles for Christ walk

NEW ORLEANS - Soles for Christ, a nine-church walk will take place on Good Friday, April 2, beginning at the Center of Jesus the Lord, 1236 N. Rampart St., New Orleans, at 8 a.m., with live Stations of the Cross and music.

Registration required. Nominal fee includes t-shirt and song booklet. Churches visited are St. Mary, St. Louis Cathedral, St. Patrick, St. Theresa of Avila, St. John the Baptist, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe (St. Jude Shrine), St. Augustine, and Center of Jesus the Lord.

American History teachers at Destrehan High School are currently seeking individuals who lived in St. Charles Parish during WWII. Classes will be interviewing and collecting oral histories on March 25 and 26 in the Wildcat Banquet Room. Sheriff to hold Seniors luncheon

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Sheriff Greg Champagne will be holding his Annual Senior Citizens Easter Luncheon on Thursday, March 25. All senior citizens of St. Charles Parish are invited to attend. It will be held at the Shriner’s Hall on Ormond Blvd. in Destrehan. Lunch will be served between 11 and 11:30 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m. Special presentation will be handed out for the oldest female and male, along with door prizes.
