HAHNVILLE - A cost-of-living increase and other salary hikes totalling $1 million are flowing to St. Charles Parish employees as part of a $90 million budget for 2007 that includes $20 million for west bank levee improvements to protect residents from flooding in a big hurricane like Katrina.

THE "buggy equivalent" of a 100-year hurricane has slammed into St. Charles Parish with residents from Norco, Ama and Kenner to Boutte, Paradis, Bayou Gauche and Des Allemands complaining that this season's crop of insects is the worst they've ever seen.

"It's interesting and it's a fun and free-spirited form of dance," says McNulty, who's taught continuing-education classes for St. Charles Parish Schools for the past two years.

A 14-year-old Destrehan boy has been booked with solicitation for murder and illegal possession of a handgun after St. Charles Parish authorities said he offered a 15-year-old Destrehan boy $90 to kill another boy.

Sheriff Greg Champagne reports that crime in St. Charles Parish during the third quarter of 2006 rose nearly 2 percent when compared to this year’s second quarter, and 12 percent when compared to last year’s third quarter.

Salvation of the west bank of St. Charles Parish could rest in the construction of a hurricane protection levee along the Intracoastal Canal south of Lake Salvador. That would take the place of other proposed routes for the Donaldsonville to the Gulf levee planned by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
