HVFD to host child-safety event

HAHNVILLE - The Hahnville Volunteer Fire Department will host an event to promote child safety and awareness on Sat. June 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station located at 14890 River Road in Hahnville.

Car seat installation and inspection is available by certified technicians by appointment only. Deadline to register is May 31.

The WHALE - We Have A Little Emergency - program, fingerprinting and fire prevention will also be addressed at the event.

‘Funky food’ for mini chefs

KENNER - The Simon Kidgits Club will host a Super Duper Mini Chefs event at the Esplanade Mall on May 30 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Kids will learn the basics of healthy eating and food facts, plus create cereal necklaces, design aprons, and receive a free chef set.

Touchdown club sells concessions at May 21 game

BOUTTE - The Hahnville High School Touchdown Club will be selling concessions at the football team’s May 21 spring game in addition to 2008 T-shirts and HHS flip flops.

All proceeds benefit the football program, cheerleaders, trainers and managers. A membership drive will also be held.

‘Pass along’ plant exchange May 16

DESTREHAN- The German Coast Farmer’s Market will hold a “Pass Along Plant Exchange” at its Saturday market on May 16 at Ormond Plantation in Destrehan. The event begins ar 10 a.m., with the exchange at 11 a.m.

Everyone is encouraged to participate by brining a well-established, healthy specimen in a one-half gallon or larger container. The botanical or pet name of the plant should be included, along with instructions for care.

Old southern plants are always popular - ones that have been “cut” from plants of friends and family and those that can’t be found at nurseries. However, all plants are welcomed.

Help “stamp out” with food drive

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Local letter carriers are calling on the community to participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 9.

Residents of the River Parishes are asked to place nonperishable food items such as canned food, pasta and cereal, in a bag and put it in or beside their mailbox.

Letter carriers will pick up the bags. Items will be delivered to local food banks to help local families in need. in St. Charles, items will be given to Social Concerns. Read More...

‘Plop Drop’ to benefit center

LAPLACE - The Greater New Orleans Therapeutic Riding Center is planning its unusual, but popular, “Plop Drop” festival May 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at the facility, 152 Shadow Brook Lane in LaPlace.

Anita Hartzell, the center’s founder and director, said the family event will include food, music, games and a plop drop.

In the plop drop, the arena will be divided into 400 segments. Each square will be sold for $10. Participants will have a chance to win $1,000 if a horse “plops” on his or her square, Hartzell said.

There will be two sets of 400 tickets, with two $1,000 winners. Winners do not need to attend the event. Among other activities being planned are a chicken drop, and other games.

Proceeds will benefit the center, which provides riding lessons to children and adults with disabilities. It serves the New Orleans area.

RRB to hold auditions May 9

DESTREHAN - The River Region Ballet will hold auditions for company and junior company members for their 2009-10 season at Images Dance Studio located at 105-A River Point Dr. in Destrehan.

Intermediate male and female dancers, 10 years and older, can audition for junior company from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Intermediate and advanced male and female dancers 13 years and older can audition from noon to 1:30 p.m.

‘Day of prayer’ events planned May 7

Heritage day for kids at plantation

DESTREHAN - Destrehan Plantation is having its 11th annual “Spring Heritage Day for students of all ages on Wednesday, May 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The educational event gives students the opportunity to learn about the self-sufficient life long ago in early Louisiana.

Demonstrations include indigo dyeing, open-hearth cooking, weaving, spinning, quilting, historical carpentry, moss mattress making, herbal healing, bee keeping, wood carving, sheering sheep, milking cows and much more.

Other lessons, exhibits and presentations are scheduled, including war reenactments.

The event is open to all schools, home school families and the general public.
