HHS Class of ‘79 reunion Sept. 5

NORCO - The Hahnville High School class of 1979 will hold its 30th class reunion on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the La Maison Magnolia Reception Hall located at 950 First St. in Norco from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets are $38 per person and $75 per couple. The tickets include open bar, food and DJ. Fees and are due by Aug. 25. Mail to 306 Valencia Dr., Luling, LA 70070. Make checks payable to HHS Class of ‘79.

LES hosts first outreach Sept. 1

LULING - Luling Elementary School will host its first community outreach event for Killona on Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the school in Luling.

Students, teachers and administrators will share information about the school. Killona families are invited to see what the school has to offer.

Among the topics are LEAP testing, tutoring, homework strategies, peer mediation, technology in the classroom and other programs and services available at the school.

Tools for Schools needs supplies

LAPLACE - River Parishes Tools for Schools is holding a drive through Aug. 31 to collect school supplies for needy students in St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes.

In addition to corporate sponsorships, the organization is asking community residents to contribute to the drive.

BCA extends Pre-K program sign up

BOUTTE - Qualifying parents can register their 4-year-olds for a chance at free placement in private school pre-kindergarten programs for the coming school year. A limited number of classroom seats are available at Boutte Christian Academy.

Qualifying requirements for parents and children include: students must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 30, 2009, students must have current immunizations, and families must have an annual household income of less than $9,140 for families of 2, $36,620 for families of three; $44,100 for families of four; $51,580 for families of five or $59,060 for families of six.

Help replace blood for Luke Zeringue

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Destrehan’s Luke Zeringue will undergo cardiac surgery due to two medical deficiencies - Factor I and Factor II - both can result in bleeding whenever his factor levels fall below normal. Hemorrhaging can occur after a trauma or surgery, so the blood is needed a head of time.

All blood types are needed. To donate blood you must be in good health, at least 17 years of age and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.

There is no upper age limit. Wait one year after a body piercing. Individuals with high blood pressure (below 180/100) or controlled diabetes can now donate. If you have medical questions or have been out of the country since 1980, call The Blood Center’s West Bank Donor Center at 504-263-1190 or Metairie Donor Center at 504-887-2833 to see if you can donate.

Library hosts free job search seminar

DESTREHAN - The St. Charles Parish Library will host a free workshop on “Effective Job Search Strategies” on Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the East Regional Library located at 100 River Oaks Dr. in Destrehan.

Tracie Bertaut, a career management consultant, will discuss resume development, interviewing strategies and overall job search skills.

8-band line-up headlines benefit

LULING - A benefit dinner for 17-month-old Briauna Frickey will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Angus Drive in Luling.

Briauna, who is the daughter of Duston Frickey and the granddaughter of Ruby Folse Frickey and Sherwood “Flash” Frickey of Des Allemands, was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma - tumors in both eyes. She is currently receiving treatment at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Admission is $5. Entertainment includes Wayne Foret, Aaron Foret, Creole Soul Band featuring Brad Sapia, Ronnie Boudreaux and Brian Melancon, Skeeter Thomassie & the Swamp Pop Band, Mark Ordoyne, The Red River Band, D.J. Fish and Duane Schurb.

Jambalaya, fried fish and white bean plate lunches will be sold for $7. There is also a chance to win a 32-inch flat screen TV. A parade of prizes will be raffled and a 50/50 drawing will also be held.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations can be made to the Briauna Frickey Medical Fund at Chase Bank.

Cottages for CASA tickets on sale

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Child Advocacy Services kicks off their first annual “Cottages for CASA” playhouse raffle on Aug. 15.

Raffle tickets for two designer playhouses will be sold until Oct. 30, when the live drawing will take place. Each playhouse is valued at $10,000.

Pichon headlines deer plot seminar

LULING - David Pichon, a county agent with the LSU Ag Center’s Cooperative Extension Service in St. Charles Parish, has announced that the LSU AgCenter will present a Deer Food Plot seminar for deer hunters on Tuesday, Aug.11 at the VFW Hall on Angus Dr. in Luling. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. followed by a meal at 6:30 p.m., with the actual program beginning at 7 p.m.

The focus of the seminar will be on fall food plot plantings for whitetail deer as well as soil preparation, fertilization and deer diseases.

There will also be vendors with educational exhibits and wildlife products for sale. The 4-H Club will also have a display on the Shooting Sports Program.

Dr. Don Reed, Professor of Forestry and Wildlife with the LSU Ag Center’s Cooperative Extension Service, will present the program on “Food Plot Plantings”to attract and hold whitetail deer.

Donations of $5 will be accepted to help pay for the seminar costs.

‘Fishing for Frankie’ Aug. 8 at Pier 90

AVONDALE - A benefit fishing tournament for Luling resident Frankie Champange, who is battling lung cancer, will be held on Aug. 8 at Pier 90 located at 10093 Highway 90 in Avondale.

Entry fees are $100 per boat - 2 persons per boat. There will be an optional $10 big bass pot that will pay back 100 percent.

Check in is from 4:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Weigh in is at noon.
Registration is continuous through the day of the tournament. The payout will be 50 percent of the profit made, the other 50 percent will be donated to the Champagne family.

The number of entries will determine the number of pay-out places. All entries will also be entered to win door prizes on the day of the tournament.

Time to plan Night Out Against Crime parties

ST. CHARLES PARISH - On Tuesday, Aug. 4 neighborhoods throughout St. Charles Parish are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 26th annual National Night Out Against Crime/Drug Prevention event.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by Sheriff Greg Champagne and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

This year’s theme is “Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.” From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 4, homeowners, apartment dwellers and businesses are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights for security and spend the evening with their neighbors and police outdoors demonstrating solidarity against crime.

Community chorus begins rehearsals

LULING - The Community Chorus of the River Parishes will begin rehearsal for their Christmas concerts on July 30 at the Presbyterian Church on Lakewood Dr. at 7 p.m.

A dinner concert will be at Ormond Country Club Dec. 4, followed by a concert at Holy Family Catholic Church in Luling on Dec. 5.

Parish pageant seeks contestants

NORCO - The 10th annual Parish of Plenty pageant is seeking contestants for this years competition on July 25 at the K.C. Home in Norco.

The entry fee for all divisions is $45, which includes photogenic. Dress code is “Sunday Best” for Baby Miss through Jr. Miss, and formal wear for Teen and Miss divisions. Queen, alternates, photogenic, fashion, prettiest hair, prettiest smile and prettiest eyes are awarded in each category.

Admission to the pageant is $2.

All proceeds will be presented to the St. Charles Festival Pageant scholarship fund. All queens will be presented at the festival pageant on Aug. 1 at Destrehan High School at 6 p.m.

Donate prizes for benefit bingo

LULING - A benefit prize bingo and barbecue dinner for Vincent Radosta will be held on July 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the VFW Hall located at 140 Angus Dr. in Luling.
Radosta, a 19-year-old Hahnville High School student, was diagnosed with Leukemia in April. He was also born with Down syndrome. All proceeds will help cover medical costs.

Organizers are asking for gift certificate donations or other items for the prize bingo. Other contributions are also accepted.
