Krewe of Lul ‘early bird’ prices good through Dec. 2

LULING - Luling’s Krewe of Lul parade organization is offering “early-bird” prices for floats - small floats are $200, large floats are $300 - fire department trucks and other units are $25.

Dance groups, marching bands and other participants such as festival queens, homecoming royalty, etc. are of no charge.

New Moon party at library

ST. CHARLES PARISH- Teens are invited to “New Moon Movie Release Parties” at St. Charles Parish Library.

Teens ages 12 and up are invited to dress as their favorite character from the book New Moon by Stephenie Meyer and attend a New Moon Movie Release Party hosted by St. Charles Parish Library. The party will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the East Regional Library in Destrehan.

The party celebrates the release of New Moon, a movie based on the second book of the Twilight young adult novel series by Stephenie Meyer. The events include door prizes, music, New Moon movie previews, character guessing games, Twilight themed crafts and more.

Women’s club autumn auction Nov. 19

St. Charles Parish Women’s Club will be hosting it’s annual Autumn Auction on Thursday, Nov. 19th. The public is invited to attend at the Presbyterian Church on Lakewoood Drive in Luling.

This Autumn Auction is one of the major fundraisers for SCWC. The members make, bake or donate seasonal items to be auctioned.

Roussell’s Anthony Lucia is the featured auctioneer.
One hundred percent of the funds raised are used for scholarships and/or donated to non-profit service organizations.

Get down at the Bayou Festival

HOUMA - Bring your dancing shoes to the Bayou Cajun Festival on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Evergreen Cajun Center in Houma.

Nicholls hosts biology meeting

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University will host the South Central Branch Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology on Nov. 6 and 7 in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union.

Dr. Joan Bennett, professor of plant biology and pathology and associate vice president for the promotion of women in science, engineering and mathematics at Rutgers University, will deliver the keynote lecture, slated for 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. Bennett’s lecture is titled “The Katrina Catastrophe: Floods, Fungi and Public Health.”

Operation Christmas love

The VFW Post 3750 of Luling, La. will be collecting items for and shipping Christmas care packages to our local troops serving overseas. Items to be collected may be dropped off at one of these locations: Thrift Village Pharmacy in Luling and Majoria’s Supermarket in Boutte.

Items needed are: body and hand lotion, shampoo, conditioner, men and women’s deodorant, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, mouthwash, razors-men’s and women’s, shaving cream, Q-tips, combs, caps-100% wool please (can be crocheted and blue, green, or brown in color), canned goods, beef jerky, snacks-(please no gummy, taffy, or chocolate), nuts, crackers, bottled waters, kool-aid mix, crystal lite mix, gloves, batteries, small flashlights, potato chips, puzzles and puzzle books, Tony Chachere's seasoning, socks, cards, lip balm, envelopes, and Christmas CD’s.

Heritage Day for elementary kids

DESTREHAN - Kindergarten through third grade students of public, private, parochial and home schools can make a “Heritage Connection” at Destrehan Plantation’s Fall Heritage Day on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature a hands-on experience for students. They will learn about candle making, sugar refining, open-hearth cooking, spinning and weaving, indigo dyeing, period dancing, wood carving, doll making, moss mattress making, calligraphy, antique toys and games, hand stitching and embroidery, quilting and many other folk life skills so important to life long ago.

A Civil War encampment and gardening with the LSU AgCenter’s master gardeners also highlight the event.
Admission is $5 for students and adults. A tour of the plantation is an additional $5. Interested persons must call for reservations.

Hunter education field day Oct. 25

ST. CHARLES PARISH - The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office will host a hunter education field day class on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class will be held at the firing range behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on Hwy. 3127.

Participants must complete the Hunter Safety Education Class beforehand. This class is available online at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/education/homestudyprogram. State law requires that all individuals born on or after Sept. 1, 1969 must obtain a hunting license prior to hunting in Louisiana.

Methe will be on hand at the German Coast Farmers’ Market at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan on Saturday, Oct. 24 to sign their book, “Historic Churches of Old New Orleans,” which captures in words and magnificent color photos, the incredible history of 50 of the oldest Catholic Churches in New Orleans.

All proceeds from the sale will go to restore the historically significant St. Alphonsus Church in the Irish Channel of New Orleans.
The book signing will begin at market’s opening at 8 a.m. and will continue until closing at noon.

SCP Girl Scouts invited to Trail Day

NEW ORLEANS - St. Charles Parish Girl Scouts are invited to discover the historic city of New Orleans by participating in Girl Scouts’ Heritage Trail Day on Sunday, Oct. 18 in the heart of the city, the French Quarter.

The walking tours include a program guide and map with detailed listings of what can be seen and completed at various stops along the way. Many of the participating museums and businesses will have special projects or presentations specifically designed for Girl Scouts.
