LULING - The Bible Center Church will hold its annual Vacation Bible School on July 13 through 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the church located at 422 Barton Ave. in Luling.

The theme for this year’s event is “Crocodile Dock” and is open to kids ages 5 to 12 who have completed the fifth grade. Songs, games, snacks, Bible adventures and much more are scheduled for the event.

Art guild kids’ camp July 13

LULING - The St. Charles Art Guild will hold its 15th summer Kids’ Visual Arts Camp July 13 through 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church on Lakewood Dr. for primary grade students who have completed first, second or third grades.

Area artists and guild volunteers, including Mississippi River clay artist Lorraine Gendron will present art fundamentals while other students explore techniques with artistic quality media including clay, watercolor, oil pastels, tissue paper and papier mache’.

A showcase featuring a matted work from each student will be displayed at the East Bank Regional Library for the following two weeks and at the West Bank Regional Library for the next two weeks.

Sign up for theater workshop

NORCO - The River Region Drama Guild will hold its “Free Youth Theater Workshop” on July 13 through 16 and July 20 through 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center located at 15146 River Road in Norco.

The workshop is open to students 10 to 18 years old and will teach them acting skills and the chance to participate in a play. The final evening will be a public performance demonstrating the skills learned in the workshop.

Farmers’ market preserves contest

DESTREHAN - The German Coast Farmers’ Market’s “Best of Preserves Contest” is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at the market at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.
The contest will be divided into different categories, allowing each contestant to enter more than one division.

Judging criteria includes the quality and appearance of the product. Products must be labeled to include the name of the preserve along with the month and year that the preserve was made.

Entries must be self-preserved by the contestant and participants must sign up for the event prior to the contest date.

The East Bank market hours are 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday.

Raise money when eating CiCi’s pizza

METAIRIE - Help raise money for “Kyle’s Krewe” and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (in memory of Luling resident Kyle Bergeron) by eating pizza at CiCi’s Pizza June 12, 19 and 25 at the Metairie restaurant located at 6311 Airline Dr.

CiCi’s will donate 10 percent of your ticket to the charity. Adult buffets are $5.49.

Metairie’s Chevys Fresh Mex is also helping to fight blood cancers.

Teen belly dance classes June 25

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Teens ages 12 and up interested in learning about Middle Eastern dance and culture are invited to participate in free belly dancing classes on Thursday, June 25 at the East Regional Library at 10:30 a.m., and at the West Regional Library at 2 p.m.. New Orleans dancer and instructor Samantha Young, who specializes in Middle Eastern, Brazilian, and Polynesian dance, will lead the workshops.

Participants will learn proper posture and dance moves and will learn how to play the zills to Arabic music. Young’s innovative workshop will encourage participants’ creativity by adding Middle Eastern moves to dances or music they like and already know.

This dance is a discipline that is great for self esteem and positive body image, as well as fostering a sense of community that comes from dancing in a group.

Hunter education summer classes

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will give hunter education classes on the dates listed below at the sheriff’s firing range in Killona.

State law requires that all individuals born on or after Sept. 1, 1969 must obtain a license and must be a least 10 years old to be certified. Courses will cover firearm safety, survival, first aid and wildlife identification.
Full class dates are: June 19 and 20, July 10 and 11, and July 24 and 25. Field days are: Aug. 22 and Sept. 12.

The times for 2-day classes are Fridays from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two field days are available to people who’ve taken online courses with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The time for field days are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held on Saturdays.

Columbine survivor to address Nicholls

THIBODAUX - Craig Scott, a survivor of the Columbine High School massacre that left 15 dead and more than 20 wounded, will serve as keynote speaker at the Louisiana Girls’ Leadership Academy – a program conducted at Nicholls State University for girls entering the eighth through eleventh grades.

The public is invited to hear Scott’s address at the closing reception on Thursday, June 18, in the commons area of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. The reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. with light refreshments, followed by an address by Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president. At 4:45 p.m., academy participants will present various service projects, followed by Scott’s address, slated for 5:45 p.m.

Hip Hop dance classes June 15

ST. CHARLES PARISH - Teens ages 12 and up interested in learning about Hip Hop dance, music and culture are invited to participate in a free Hip Hop Dance Workshop on Monday, June 15 at the East Regional Library at 10:30 a.m., and at the West Regional Library at 4 p.m.

Professional Hip Hop dancers and local dance instructors Terrance Morgan and Tyler Wilson, of the dance duo Rhythm & Soul, will lead the workshops.

Participants will discover brand new urban dance steps and learn about the origins of Hip Hop music, dance, and break dancing.

The East Regional Library is located at 100 River Oaks Drive in Destrehan, and the St. Rose Branch is located at 90 East Club Drive in St. Rose.

German Coast Farmers’ Market celebrates 7 years in Destrehan

DESTREHAN - The German Coast Farmers’ Market celebrates its 7th anniversary on Saturday, June 13 at its East Bank location at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.

Attractions slated for this special celebration includes the “Taste of the Season” - pony rides, face painting, music by Blanch Newsome and door prizes.
