‘Walk for Autism’ slated for April 12

NEW ORLEANS - The Greater New Orleans Autism Society of America will hold its annual Walk for Autism Awareness on Saturday, April 12 at La Salle Park located at 6600 Airline Dr. in Metairie.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. with the the walk to follow at 9:30 a.m.

Events include: music, food, children’s activities, a parade of prizes and a silent auction.

American Legion hall sponsors blood drive

HAHNVILLE - The American Legion #131 will sponsor a community blood drive with Ochsner Blood Bank on April 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the St. Charles Parish Courthouse located at 15045 River Rd.

All donors will receive a New Orleans Hornets Blood Bank T-shirt, a mini physical, blood typing, cholesterol test and blood assurance package. A free meal will be served to participants and all donors can register to win two AMC movie passes.

Spring garden show set for April 5 & 6

NEW ORLEANS - The 2008 Spring Garden Show in New Orleans will be held at the City Park Botanical Garden on April 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Patrons can browse through gardens and meet with plant and garden product vendors.

The show will also feature a Q & A tent where LSU AgCenter specialists will answer questions relating to tree and plant health, and soil samples can be brought in for analysis.

Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 and members of Friends of City Park may enter free.

Giddy up! Horseshow at Houma Air Base

HOUMA - The Terrebone Livestock Association will present a horseshow on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Houma Air Base Arena located at 221 Moffet Rd.

Get ready to run!

LULING - Grab your running - or walking shoes - and head on over to the East Bank Bridge Park on Saturday, April 5 for the United Way’s annual 5K marathon that will take you across the Hale Boggs Mississippi River Bridge and lead you to the finish line at the West Bank Bridge Park.

Late registration forms are now being accepted for a fee of $25 through the day of the race along with a $20 no T-shirt entry.

The 3.1 mile course offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Mississippi River from the Hale Boggs Bridge. And race organizers have left nothing to chance - there’s an alternate ground-level course that may be used in the event of hazardous conditions or weather on the bridge.

Packet pickup and late registration information is Friday, April 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the West Bank Bridge Park. Packet pickup begins at 7:30 a.m. on race day at the East Bank Bridge Park.

The 5K runners will fire off at 8:30 a.m. with race walkers and fitness walkers following at 8:32 a.m.

Awards will be given in seven divisions and a $4,000 prize money purse. Commemorative medallions will also be presented to the 1st and 2nd place male and female in each age group.

Post race festivities include: music by The Wiseguys, food and refreshments, face painting, inflatables, dunking booths, St. Charles Parish bookmobile, pony rides, raffles and a 50/50.

Cake BINGO held for Abigayl Breaux fund

LULING - A cake bingo for the Abigayl Breaux Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. Anthony C.A. Building located behind St. Anthony Church in Luling.

$5 entry includes 1 bingo card, 1 drink and 1 hot dog or nacho plate. Additional cards are $1 each.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with a 50/50 raffle.

NORCO - The St. Charles Council On Aging and the St. Charles Department of Parks and Recreation Annual Fishing Rodeo for seniors 60 years of age and up on Friday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Spillway Park Pavilion.
Fishing poles and bait are supplied. Lunch and transportation will be provided by reservation only.

Activities include: fishing contest, cookie cook-off contest, hat contest and parade, Tall Fish Tales contest, senior olympic practice games, and music and dancing.

LULING - St. Charles Parish libraries and the National Endowment for the Arts presents the Big Read on Tuesday, April 1 at the West Regional Library in Luling at 6:30 p.m.
The event will feature a book discussion and celebration of the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines.

UWSC Bridge Run scheduled for April

This is the twelfth year of the United Way of St. Charles 5K Bridge Run. This premier sporting event raises awareness of United Way and the need for health and human services critical to our community. The theme this year is “Building Communities, Enriching Lives”.

The UWSC needs and appreciates both in-kind and cash donations. Bridge Run Posters, signed and numbered by local artist Matt Touchard are available for $20 each. Activities include face painting, dunking booths,
inflatables, pony rides and raffles. There will also be $4,000 in prize money.

DESTREHAN - The third annual River Road Car & Bike Show will be held on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Destrehan Plantation.

Row after row of classic cars, trucks and bikes will fill the front lawn of the historic plantation, all competing for a wide range of awards.

The event will feature live music by Don Rich and Ruff-N-Ready, delicious Cajun food, local crafts and children’s face painting and pony rides.

The show’s $10 admission fee includes a tour of the beautiful Destrehan Plantation home.

Cars, trucks and bikes are welcome to enter the competition. Entry fee is $20 for early registration and

$25 for day of show registration.

Farmer’s market Easter parade is ‘egg-cellent’ fun for the family

DESTREHAN - The German Coast Farmers' Market will host its second Easter parade, Kid Krewe du Market, on Saturday, March 22 at 10 a.m. on the market grounds, Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.

Children ages 8 and under are invited to dress up in costume and parade through the Market in their decorated wagons to celebrate Easter.

The wagons must be pulled by an adult and throws are to be provided by the participants.

Entry fee is $5 and registration is held at 9:30 a.m. at the sign-up table at the Market. 1st and 2nd place prizes will be awarded.

While enjoying the festivities, which also included Easter Egg Hunt, Face Painting, and a visit from the Easter Bunny, plan to shop the Market for your Easter dinner “fixins.”

Satellite Center hosts food drive

Empty Bowls, an event where all proceeds are given to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans, will be held March 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Satellite Center Banquet Room.

The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Students from St. Charles Parish Public Schools create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for a meal and the bowl, all guests donate $10 per person for a ticket to the event. Tickets are available at the door.
