Church hosts Bible school in Boutte

BOUTTE - It's time for vacation Bible school at West St. Charles Baptist Church.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are admitted free from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 14 through 18.
In this one-week adventure, kids will hear Bible stories, participate in cool crafts, listen to motivating music, eat snacks and play games.

Catfish Festival needs volunteers

DES ALLEMANDS - The Louisiana Catfish Festival committee is seeking volunteers to help with the festival July 11-13 on the St. Gertrude Grounds in Des Allemands.

The plant booth is accepting donations. Plants, pots and soil are needed. To help, call Jamie Hue at 985-758-1936.
The country store needs all donations, except clothes.

DESTREHAN - The German Coast Farmer’s Market The Best of Preserves Contest is scheduled for Saturday, July 12 on the grounds of Destrehan Plantation.

Your goal will be to retain valuable vitamins and minerals, while keeping the product pretty and tasting good. Information booklets are available at both Markets provided by the LSU Ag Center.

There are seven categories and contestants are allowed to enter more than one category.

Judging criteria will include quality or appearance of product.

Products must be labeled to include the name of the preserve along with the month and year that the preserve was made.

Revival scheduled at church July 11

BOUTTE - Co-pastor Cyntrell Janeau and the Women of the Word Ministry of Changing A Generation FGBC in Boutte will be hosting a “One Night Revival” on Friday, July 11 at 7 p.m. at 14271 Highway 90.

The theme is “Women Empowered to Conquer.” Guest speaker Pastor Fran Love will also be in attendance.

Sheriff offers hunter education

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will offer two hunter education course sessions to the public on the following dates:

•Friday, July 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, July 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

•Friday, July 25 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, July 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course is designed for young hunters seeking to obtain their first hunting license as well as hunters who seek to acquire an out of state license.

All classes will be held at the Richard Benoit Memorial Firearms Range located behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona.

Participants will be required to complete one weekend class for certification purposes.

Drama guild stages Beauty & the Beast

DESTREHAN - Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be performed at Destrehan Auditorium, 1 Wild Cat Lane in Destrehan for a limited engagement beginning Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Other performances will be held on July 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and July 13 at 2:00 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years of age.

Middle school needs your help

PARADIS - J.B. Martin Middle School in Paradis is asking families to save the pull tabs of canned drinks.

The tabs will be redeemed to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The tabs can be delivered to the school, beginning in August.

Microchipping for pets discounted

LULING - St. Charles Parish Animal Control is offering $15 microchipping for dogs and cats through hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30

Microchipping is available at the shelter, located under the Luling Bridge on the West Bank, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parish hosts 4th of July celebration

LULING - A fireworks extravaganza will once again cap off St. Charles Parish’s Independence Day Celebration, from 6 to 9 p.m. July 3 at the West Bank Bridge Park, 13825 River Road.

Those include a patriotic musical performance by the St. Charles Parish Community Band under the direction of David Rosenthal. There will also be a red, white and blue clown with balloon animals for the kids as well as an F-15 flyover.

Opening ceremonies, including the national anthem and a 21-gun salute, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will help countdown to the flyover shortly thereafter. A DJ will entertain the crowd throughout the night.

Local nonprofit groups will sell food and drinks, including jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, snowballs and baked goods.

Ryan Post to sing at Mochachino’s

DESTREHAN - Singer-songwriter Ryan Post will play at Mochachino’s on Ormond Boulevard on Saturday, June 28 at 6 p.m. Post, 26, is a native of Luling and a graduate of Hahnville High School. He has been writing, recording, and performing his own music for several years.

The style of Ryan’s music has been described as a unique blend of blues, jazz, and pop-rock. After releasing his first full-length studio album Nola in the Fall of 2006, Ryan’s music has received radio airplay from several radio stations in Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, and other states.

Business grant and loan meeting

LAPLACE - The River Region Chamber of Commerce will host a Phase II LA Business Recovery Grant and Loan Program informational meeting on Friday, June 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the chamber located at 301 W. Airline Highway, Ste. 201 in LaPlace.

This program is designed to support small businesses in 20 parishes recovering from the after-effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
