Kids fishing rodeo in St. James

ST. JAMES - Summer may be coming to a close, but there is still time to use those fishing poles.

The St. James Boat Club will hold their "Annual Jr. Choupique Rodeo" on Aug. 3, 2008, on the Blind River Point Area and Boat Launch Areas. All participants, both male and female, up to 15 years old in the fishing rodeo are asked to be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

The fishing times start at 8 a.m. and end at noon. The fishing time has changed, but the registration fee is still 25 cents, so please be sure to get registered before fishing. Fishing is restricted to the banks of the Blind River Point and Boat Launch Areas. Awards will be given at close of rodeo. Refreshments will be sold at the Point Area.

Traveling art exhibit at libraries

The Traveling Showcase, created at the St. Charles Art Guild’s Kids Camp, is now on display through Aug. 2 at the East Bank library in Destrehan and will travel to the West Regional Library for display from Aug. 4 through 18.

LSU author speaks at East Regional

LULING - Bud Johnson, author of “The Perfect Season: LSU’s Magic Year - 1958,” will read from his book and share his memories of LSU’s historic 1958 football season at the the East Regional Library on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m.
The library is located at 100 River Oaks Dr. in Destrehan. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $24.95.

LULING - Bud Johnson, author of “The Perfect Season: LSU’s Magic Year - 1958,” will read from his book and share his memories of LSU’s historic 1958 football season at the the East Regional Library on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m.

Booster clubs hold registration

The Des Allemands Booster Club will hold cheerleader registration on July 31 at the Des Allemands ball field from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The booster club will also hold football registration on Aug. 14 at the ball field from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Aug. 20 at Landry Middle School.

Boys 6 years and older may participate this year if they turn 6 by Aug. 1.

The Des Allemands Booster Club will also have a free football clinic for Des Allemands, Bayou Gauche and Paradis players on Aug. 4 through 8 at 5 p.m. at the Des Allemands ball field. Contact Tim Perrin at 504-417-6973 for more information.

The Mimosa Booster Club will hold its football and cheerleading registration Aug. 6 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Elementary cafeteria.

HHS sets textbook, fee schedules

BOUTTE - Hahnville High School has announced its schedule for paying fees, picking up textbooks and physical education uniforms, taking identification pictures and requesting schedule changes for the 2008-09 school year.
If more than one child in the family attends HHS at different grade levels, parents should choose one of the assigned times to come for both.

Students must bring their schedule with them and wear a uniform shirt to take their identification card picture.
Seniors report July 30 from 8 a.m. to noon. Freshmen report July 30 from 1 to 5 p.m. Juniors report July 31 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sophomores report Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

If students do not pick up textbooks, pay fees, take ID pictures and get PE uniforms on their scheduled day, they should do so Aug. 5 from 8 to 11 a.m. or stay after school Aug. 14. No books will be issued during the regular school day.

St. Charles Parish Assessor's Millage Meeting

The St. Charles Parish Assessor's office will hold a public hearing on July 30 at 2 p.m. at the St. Charles Parish Courthouse in Hahnville to consider levying additional or increased millage rates without further voter approval.

Another plan calls for the adopting of the adjusted millage rate and rolling forward to a millage that would not exceed the prior year's maximum. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, which impacts the amount of property taxes residents are charged annually. For more information prior to the meeting, residents can contact the Tax Assessors office at 985-783-6281.

River Parish kids take the stage

LAPLACE - Children in the River Parishes will have the opportunity to take to the stage July 28 through Aug. 2 when the Missoula Children's Theatre makes its annual visit to St. John Theatre in Reserve.

The internationally known theater company, based in Montana, travels throughout the country presenting acting workshops and plays to involve children in the arts.
The troupe, along with local children, will work on a production of "The Little Mermaid" at the theater, 115 W. Fourth St.

The cost is $50. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade may audition for roles on July 28 at 9 a.m. Preregistration will not be accepted, and participation is limited.

Bayou Gauche church holds VBS

DES ALLEMANDS - Life Fellowship Community church in Bayou Gauche will hold its annual vacation Bible school July 28 through Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Boys and girls, ages 5-12, are invited to attend. Visit www.lifefcc.com to register.

Food distribution at health center

LULING - The St. Charles Community Health Center in Luling and Second Harvest will sponsor a food distribution July 26 from 9 a.m. to noon across the street from the center at 853 Milling Ave.

Participants must bring a photo ID and proof of income in the form of a pay stub, letter from Medicare, tax returns or other documentation. Call 985-785-5800 for more information.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the food distribution. Two crews are needed to work from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

‘Gary T.’ headlines monthly dance

Become election commissioner

A course of instruction will be held for any St. Charles Parish resident who is interested in serving as a Commissioner or a Commissioner-in-Charge for elections that began on July 1 and will last through July 1, 2012.

The class will be offered on July 21 at 2 p.m., July 23 at 6 p.m. and July 25 at 10 a.m. All classes will be held in the office of the Clerk of Court in Hahnville. This course will qualify each resident who completes it for a four-year period and they will not have to take the course again until 2012.

Interested residents must be a registered voter in the district where they live, must need no assistance to vote, must be able to open and close a voting machine without assistance and must complete all election forms correctly.
Residents won't qualify for the classes if they have been convicted of an election offense or are a candidate for election to public office.

Current Commissioners and Commissioners-in-Charge are required to attend one of the classes in order to be recommissioned.

Sheriff offers hunter education

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will offer tone hunter education course session to the public on Friday, July 25 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, July 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course is designed for young hunters seeking to obtain their first hunting license as well as hunters who seek to acquire an out of state license.

All classes will be held at the Richard Benoit Memorial Firearms Range located behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona.

Participants will be required to complete one weekend class for certification purposes.

Drama guild hosts summer workshop

NORCO - The River Region Drama Guild is offering a free 8-night theater workshop for students 10 to 18 years old.
The workshop will be held July 21 through 24 continuing to July 28 through 31 at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center located at 15146 River Road in Norco.

The workshop will meet for two hours each evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and culminates with a one-time-only performance on July 31 at 7 p.m.

St. Gertrude plans July Bible school

DES ALLEMANDS - St. Gertrude Catholic Church will sponsor vacation Bible school July 21-25 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the church in Des Allemands.

Children in prekindergarten through sixth grade can attend. Registration forms are available in the rectory and church.
