Dolores Goldie Bernice Bergeron, age 85, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at St. Charles Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Bergeron, Sr., parents Adolf and Viola Kinnison.

• Corey J. Pierre, 36, of 419 Boutte Estates Dr., Boutte, was arrested and charged with poss. with intent to dist. SCH II CDS to wit cocaine, resisting arrest by flight, resisting an officer, poss. of SCH I CDS to wit marijuana, SCSO attachment and a fugitive from Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office at the above address on June 16. Sheriff Champagne reports that the above subject was stopped for suspicious person and further investigation revealed the subject to be in poss. of cocaine and marijuana.

With summer in full swing, Hill Heights Country Club's swim team, the Hurricanes, are hard at work practicing, swimming and competing at local swim meets. Head Coach, Nicole Matherne, says despite their recent losses she is happy with the progress of her swimmers. "We have lost our first two meets but the kids are improving with every practice and every meet. And that is what is important to me," said Matherne.

Every fifty-two hours, on an average, a law enforcement officer is killed somewhere in America while protecting their communities. Last week, the officer paying this supreme sacrifice was very close to our homes. So close in fact, that our willingness in the past not to think about this ugly side of America can no longer be ignored.

|New York publishers aghast at destruction here

As members of Louisiana Press Association, we took a helicopter and bus tour of devastated areas of New Orleans soon after Hurricane Katrina. On Friday, we took a bus tour of the same areas with the New York Publishers Association down here to report on progress since the storm. Unfortunately, there was little progress seen in those areas.

At the moment, only four days remain in the legislative session. Time enough to do harm, time enough to do good-and perhaps time enough to add a bit more to the record level of state spending. The voters who pay attention to the legislative process will probably focus on two things in the 2006 Regular Session: The first is the record budget headed for the governor's desk; the second is the ethanol mandate that will likely hit them in their wallets.

Introduced by Councilman Dickie Duhe, a resolution passed requesting the Parish President Albert Laque, along with St. Charles Economic Development and Tourism Director Corey Faucheux, to pursue and invite Holy Cross High School to relocate its campus from the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans to St. Charles Parish.

In the early morning hours of June 11, thieves struck Birdie's Express, on River Road in Hahnville. At 1:52 a.m., St. Charles Parish deputies responded to a call from the store's owner stating that the store had been burglarized.
