Middle school needs your help

PARADIS - J.B. Martin Middle School in Paradis is asking families to save the pull tabs of canned drinks.

The tabs will be redeemed to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The tabs can be delivered to the school, beginning in August.

Microchipping for pets discounted

LULING - St. Charles Parish Animal Control is offering $15 microchipping for dogs and cats through hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30

Microchipping is available at the shelter, located under the Luling Bridge on the West Bank, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parish hosts 4th of July celebration

LULING - A fireworks extravaganza will once again cap off St. Charles Parish’s Independence Day Celebration, from 6 to 9 p.m. July 3 at the West Bank Bridge Park, 13825 River Road.

Those include a patriotic musical performance by the St. Charles Parish Community Band under the direction of David Rosenthal. There will also be a red, white and blue clown with balloon animals for the kids as well as an F-15 flyover.

Opening ceremonies, including the national anthem and a 21-gun salute, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will help countdown to the flyover shortly thereafter. A DJ will entertain the crowd throughout the night.

Local nonprofit groups will sell food and drinks, including jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, snowballs and baked goods.

Pastor honored for 26 years of service

PARADIS - The First Baptist Church Family of Paradis would like to invite all church families and friends to pastor, Elder Albert M. Charles’ 26th anniversary on Sunday, June 29 at 11:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. Frank Davis, Jr. of Bible Way Baptist Church of New Orleans.

The church is also teaching an adult class on the book of John and a children’s class on Jesus on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Ryan Post to sing at Mochachino’s

DESTREHAN - Singer-songwriter Ryan Post will play at Mochachino’s on Ormond Boulevard on Saturday, June 28 at 6 p.m. Post, 26, is a native of Luling and a graduate of Hahnville High School. He has been writing, recording, and performing his own music for several years.

The style of Ryan’s music has been described as a unique blend of blues, jazz, and pop-rock. After releasing his first full-length studio album Nola in the Fall of 2006, Ryan’s music has received radio airplay from several radio stations in Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, and other states.

Business grant and loan meeting

LAPLACE - The River Region Chamber of Commerce will host a Phase II LA Business Recovery Grant and Loan Program informational meeting on Friday, June 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the chamber located at 301 W. Airline Highway, Ste. 201 in LaPlace.

This program is designed to support small businesses in 20 parishes recovering from the after-effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The meeting is open to the community. Seating is limited to the first 50 people that RSVP.

Triad committee meets June 26

LULING - The Triad will hold a community meeting on Thursday, June 26 at 10 a.m. at the VFW Hall in Luling located at 140 Angus Dr.

Sheriff Greg Champagne invites all senior citizens to attend. The meeting topic will zero in on hurricane preparedness and crime prevention. Lunch will be served.

Fashion workshop & runway show

DESTREHAN - The St. Charles Parish Library invites teens ages 12 and up to attend a free alternative fashion workshop as part of the Louisiana Teen Reading program on Friday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Kerry Fitts, an artist and educator from Gretna, will lead the workshop.

Participants will learn sewing techniques using recycled materials and environmentally-friendly fabrics as well as hand silk-screened images to create original summer fashions.

Fourteen years ago, St. Charles Parish deputies were called to a bloody scene after a group of juveniles had tried to force their way into a New Sarpy club. As deputies were trying to control the crowd in the parking lot, a shot rang out from inside the club and a stream of people came running out of the building.
