Statewide “Tropical Delights” orchid show this weekend

BATON ROUGE - With the theme of “Tropical Delights,” the Baton Rouge Orchid Society will present its 31st annual Orchid Show and Plant Sale on July 10 - 11 at the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 3790 Independence Blvd. Orchid societies from Houma, Lafayette, and Alexandria, and others from across the Gulf South will stage awesome exhibits to carry out this theme.

The show is free and open to the public. Dates and times are Saturday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hunter education classes offered

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office will give Hunter Education Classes on the dates listed below. State Law requires that all individuals born on or after Sept. 1, 1969 to obtain a hunting license prior to hunting in Louisiana. Individuals must be 10 years of age or older to be certified. The course will cover such topics as firearm safety, survival, first aid, and wildlife identification.
Each student must pre- register and attend each day. The classes will be held at the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s firing range. The times for the two-day classes will be Fridays, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be two field days for individuals that have taken the course online with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The time for the field days are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Dates for full classes are:
July 9, 10, 30 and 31.

Dates for the field days are:
Aug. 14 and 28.

Celebrate Independence Day with St. Charles

LULING - St. Charles Parish will host its 20th Annual Independence Day Celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 3 at the West Bank Bridge Park, 13825 River Road.

The special anniversary event will feature a performance by the local band “The Wiseguys.” The band is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., with fireworks to begin at 9 p.m. The first 3,000 attendees will receive a 20th anniversary keepsake pack. The event will also feature a patriotic balloon-twisting clown for the kids as well as a military flyover. The flyover will be part of the opening ceremony, which is set to begin at 6:15 p.m. Seven local groups will sell food and drinks at the event. Poppers, 3-D fireworks viewing glasses and glow necklaces will also be available. Vendors will be located in the West Bank Bridge Park’s concession stand and permanent shelters.

I-310 southbound and northbound off ramps to LA 18 will be closed 15 minutes prior to the fireworks and throughout the show, and LA 18 will be closed from Ashton Plantation Boulevard to the School Board Office. 2nd Annual Special Olympics camp open

ST. CHARLES PARISH - St. Charles Parks and Recreation will host the 2nd Annual Special Olympics’ Camp Shriver. The goal is to provide another level of challenge for athletes with disabilities and promote equality and inclusion. The camp will be social as well as athletic, and campers come from public and private schools, volunteer agencies, and the local community.

The camp will be held at Ethel Schoeffner Elementary School, 140 Plantation Road in Destrehan from June 29 to July 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Target sports are bocce, soccer,softball/t-Ball, tennis, and volleyball.

NOCCA open house for all future students

NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), 2800 Chartres St. in New Orleans, invites parents and middle or high school students who are considering applying and auditioning to NOCCA’s Media Arts Department to a special Open House on Thursday, June 17 at 3 p.m. The event takes place in the new Media Arts Classroom and Media Lab as well as the Recording Studio at NOCCA. No RSVP is required and the event is free and open to the public. The open house begins promptly at 3 p.m. and concludes by 4:30 p.m.

Court Appointed Advocates volunteer training to begin

ST. CHARLES PARISH - The St Charles Parish CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program needs volunteers to be the voice for children in the community who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect. CASA depends on volunteers to make a difference in the lives of these innocent children. There are currently two children in St Charles Parish waiting for a CASA.

The next CASA training for St Charles parish volunteers will begin on June 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Child Advocacy Services office, 816 Paul Maillard Road in Lulling. To participate in this training you will need to complete the CASA volunteer application.
