Operation Christmas love

The VFW Post 3750 of Luling, La. will be collecting items for and shipping Christmas care packages to our local troops serving overseas. Items to be collected may be dropped off at one of these locations: Thrift Village Pharmacy in Luling and Majoria’s Supermarket in Boutte.

Items needed are: body and hand lotion, shampoo, conditioner, men and women’s deodorant, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, mouthwash, razors-men’s and women’s, shaving cream, Q-tips, combs, caps-100% wool please (can be crocheted and blue, green, or brown in color), canned goods, beef jerky, snacks-(please no gummy, taffy, or chocolate), nuts, crackers, bottled waters, kool-aid mix, crystal lite mix, gloves, batteries, small flashlights, potato chips, puzzles and puzzle books, Tony Chachere's seasoning, socks, cards, lip balm, envelopes, and Christmas CD’s.

Heritage Day for elementary kids

DESTREHAN - Kindergarten through third grade students of public, private, parochial and home schools can make a “Heritage Connection” at Destrehan Plantation’s Fall Heritage Day on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature a hands-on experience for students. They will learn about candle making, sugar refining, open-hearth cooking, spinning and weaving, indigo dyeing, period dancing, wood carving, doll making, moss mattress making, calligraphy, antique toys and games, hand stitching and embroidery, quilting and many other folk life skills so important to life long ago.

A Civil War encampment and gardening with the LSU AgCenter’s master gardeners also highlight the event.
Admission is $5 for students and adults. A tour of the plantation is an additional $5. Interested persons must call for reservations.

Hunter education field day Oct. 25

ST. CHARLES PARISH - The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office will host a hunter education field day class on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class will be held at the firing range behind the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on Hwy. 3127.

Participants must complete the Hunter Safety Education Class beforehand. This class is available online at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/education/homestudyprogram. State law requires that all individuals born on or after Sept. 1, 1969 must obtain a hunting license prior to hunting in Louisiana.

DESTREHAN - Author George Gurtner and photographer Frank H. Methe will be on hand at the German Coast Farmers’ Market at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan on Saturday, Oct. 24 to sign their book, “Historic Churches of Old New Orleans,” which captures in words and magnificent color photos, the incredible history of 50 of the oldest Catholic Churches in New Orleans.

All proceeds from the sale will go to restore the historically significant St. Alphonsus Church in the Irish Channel of New Orleans.
The book signing will begin at market’s opening at 8 a.m. and will continue until closing at noon.

SCP Girl Scouts invited to Trail Day

NEW ORLEANS - St. Charles Parish Girl Scouts are invited to discover the historic city of New Orleans by participating in Girl Scouts’ Heritage Trail Day on Sunday, Oct. 18 in the heart of the city, the French Quarter.

The walking tours include a program guide and map with detailed listings of what can be seen and completed at various stops along the way. Many of the participating museums and businesses will have special projects or presentations specifically designed for Girl Scouts.

Fall garden show in N.O. Oct. 17-18

NEW ORLEANS - The 2009 Fall Garden Show will be held at City Park botanical garden Oct. 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Vendors, including horticulture services companies, will be offering a variety of plants and garden products.

Louisiana Master Gardeners and horticulture experts from the LSU AgCenter will be available to answer homeowners questions. Visitors are asked to bring soil samples for testing by the center’s soil testing lab.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 and members of Friends of City Park may enter free.

Learn how to save energy Oct. 16

NEW SARPY - The St. Charles Parish Department of Community Services will present a household energy conservation workshop at 10 a.m. on Oct. 16 at the Arterbury Building, 14565 River Road.

The public is invited to attend, but space is limited, so an RSVP is required. Those interested should call 985-764-7944.

Demonstrations will include information about energy-efficient light bulbs and the value of caulk to seal window and doorway leaks. ‘Wizard of Oz’ at Hahnville Oct. 14

RSVP for Oktober Fest by Oct. 12

NORCO - The German-Acadian Coast Genealogical Society will host its annual Oktober Fest featuring German food and a presentation of Louisiana’s role in the American Revolution next month.

The dinner will be held at La Maison Magnolia, 950, First St. in Norco. A cash bar opens at 6 p.m. Dinner follows at 7 p.m. The cost for dinner, the presentation and door prizes is $26 per person.

Pass along plant exchange Oct. 10

DESTREHAN - A “Pass Along” plant exchange will be held on Oct. 10. All are invited to participate by bringing a well-established, healthy specimen in a one-half gallon or larger container.

Each person will be allowed one entry. The botanical or pet name of the plant should be included, along with simple instructions for care.

Old Southern plants are always very popular, such as those “passed down” or “cut” from plants of family and friends - those that we fondly remember seeing in our grandparents’ yards.

The plant exchanges are always interesting and fun as someone always enters a very unusual and sometimes rare plant.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. Exchange will take place at 11 a.m.

COA now taking ball nominations

HAHNVILLE - The St. Charles Council on Aging and the parish’s recreation department are sponsoring the 14th annual Young At Heart Mardi Gras ball on Jan. 16, 2010. Nominations are being accepted through Oct. 5.

All organizations that have senior citizens as part of its membership are invited to nominate a couple to represent the organization for the court that will be chosen on Nov. 13 at a brunch at the COA’s Hahnville Center.

The king and queen will be chosen on Dec. 11 at a tea.

Memorial walk for deceased children

METAIRIE - The Compassionate Friends organization will hold its annual Children’s Memorial Walk on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m., beginning and ending at the Children’s Memorial Garden located at 3000 Downs Blvd. in Metairie inside Lafreniere Park.

The group invites bereaved families, relatives, friends and the community to join them as they walk to remember all beloved children who have died.
