31st Annual LA Sportsmen’s show this weekend

GONZALES - The 31st Annual Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show and Festival has everything for the sportfishing, boating and hunting enthusiast.

It will be held on March 12 from 2-9 p.m., March 13 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and March 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales.

General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for kids. Those dressed in a military uniform get in free.

The event will include hundreds of fishing and hunting booths, boat areas and more with special show prices.
New this year are the Purina Incredible Dog Team performing amazing acts of acrobatic skill and “Meet the Troutmasters: A Reunion” featuring many of the 14 anglers featured in the book “Trout Masters: How Louisiana’s Best Anglers Catch the Lunkers.

St. Charles 4-H Jr. Leader garage sale

LULING - St. Charles 4-H Jr. Leader Garage Sale will be held at the St. Charles 4-H Office on March 13 from 8 a.m. –4 p.m. The 4-H Office is located at 1313 Paul Maillard Road, Suite E in Luling, which is located on the right of the CVS Shopping Center.

This garage sale will help to fund the St. Charles 4-H Jr.
Leader Club Awards Trip. Baked goods will also be sold at the garage sale.

School district fair for disabled children & families

ST. CHARLES PARISH - St. Charles Parish Public Schools is pleased to invite you to its 2010 “Bridging the Gap” Transition Fair. The Transition Fair will be held at the Professional Learning Center, previously the old K-mart building, on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This is an event to bring awareness and information to students, parents, and teachers of children with disabilities from birth to twenty-two about services that are available to their families. This is a great opportunity for parents of students from birth to twenty-two to gather useful information and resources.

ACT prep classes available

DESTREHAN - Sessions to help prepare for taking the ACT will be available to students who are residents of St. Charles Parish on Sat., March 6 from 9 a.m. until noon at Destrehan High School. Interested students will need to choose one of the three sessions offered: English, Reading, or Math.

Students may register by completing and printing the registration form found on their school’s Web site or by picking up a form in the school’s office, the school’s counseling office, or the reception desk at the St. Charles Parish School Board Office. The registration fee is $10 if registered by March 3.

Checks should be made payable to St. Charles Parish Schools.

Alpha Daughters of Zion banquet

BOUTTE - The Alpha Daughters of Zion is hosting a banquet on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Mt. Airy Multi-Purpose Building, 13635 Old Spanish Trail, Boutte.

Ticket cost is $25.

The theme for the event is “Embracing Sisterhood.”

Food distribution to be held Feb. 27

LULING - The St. Charles Community Health Center and Second Harvest will sponsor a food distribution every fourth Saturday.

A distribution will take place Feb. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at St. Anthony’s Church, 234 Angus Drive in Luling.
Those attending must bring picture identification and proof of income (such as a pay stub, letter from Medicare or tax return).

2010-11 Hahnville Hi-Stepper Tryouts

HAHNVILLE - There will be an informational meeting about Hi-Stepper tryouts for the 2010-11 school year on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Hahnville High School auditorium. At the meeting, sponsors will discuss all necessary information regarding paperwork and requirements for tryouts.

Those interested in trying out who are unable to attend the meeting should contact Ms. Holley Johnson (hjohnson1@stcharles.k12.la.us) or Mrs. Maggie Corzo (mcorzo@stcharles.k12.la.us) after the meeting to obtain a packet with tryout information.

A mandatory instructional workshop will be held in the HHS gym on March 8-11 from 3 to 5 p.m., and tryouts will be held in the gym on March 12 beginning at 3 p.m.

Community Ed classes offered

ST. CHARLES PARISH - St. Charles Parish Public Schools is offering a variety of different community education classes this spring, ranging from art and dance to finance and writing. Class locations will be available on both the east and west banks. For a full list of available classes, visit www.stcharles.k12.la.us.

Deadline to register is Feb. 22. Parishioners can register by mail, drop-off or walk-in. An early registration discount of 5% will be given to those who register prior to Feb. 12.

Benefit to help fight melanoma

KENNER - A benefit fish fry for Chris Guillot, 18, who is fighting melanoma, will be held on Friday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. -till. It will take place at Kenner Volunteer Fire Hall, 400 Veterans Blvd. Lunch plates of fried catfish, potato salad, french bread, desert and a drink will be $7 with all proceeds going towards Chris Guillot’s medical expenses.

8-week seminar on spirit, literature

NEW ORLEANS - Our Lady of Holy Cross College announces its first continuing education program for 2010, an eight-week workshop, “Spirituality & Literature,” starting Thursday, Feb. 18. Susan Blalock, Ph.D., emeritus professor, author, lecturer and scholar on the subjects of poetry, creative writing, language and literature, will facilitate group discussions of short works by several contemporary American authors.

Anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of spirituality is invited to attend. Classes will be held at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, 4123 Woodland Ave., New Orleans, on consecutive Thursdays, Feb. 18 and 25; March 4, 11, 18 and 25; and April 8 and 15 at 6:30 – 8 p.m. The cost

Farm Bureau seeks talent contestants

LULING - St. Charles Farm Bureau Queen, Teen Queen, and Talent Contests will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at the St. Rose American Legion Hall.

Queen's Contest - Girls must be between the ages of 16 - 19, single, never married, and never had a child. Winner receives crown, banner, scholarship award, and expense paid trip to state convention in June. Contestants will participate in Evening and Interview competitions. This is a binding title. Entry Fee - $40

Teen Queen's Contest - Girls must be between the ages of 13 - 15, single, never married, and never had a child.
Winner receives crown, banner, scholarship award, and expense paid trip to pageant night of state convention in June. Contestants will participate in Evening and Interview competitions. This is a binding title. Entry Fee - $30

Talent Contest - Acts include dance, sing, musical, act, tumble, etc. Acts cannot have more than 4 people, must be in good taste and cannot exceed 3 minutes 59 seconds. Winner receives prize, expense paid trip to state convention contest. Entry Fee - $20

Author to discuss, sign book about 1811 slave revolt

DESTREHAN - Dan Rasmussen, author of “American Uprising: The untold Story of America’s Largest Slave Revolt” will be signing copies of his book at East Regional Library on Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. - the actual 200th anniversary of the revolt that took place along the East Bank River Road. The book will be published on Jan. 4, 2011. He will also discuss his book and the history of the revolt. The presentation is free. The event is sponsored by the St. Charles Museum and Historical Association and St. Charles Parish Library.
