Rifle shooting open at gun range

ST. CHARLES PARISH - The St. Charles Parish Range will be open to the public for shooting rifles on August 21 and 28, September 11 and 18, and October 16 and 23. The times will be from 8- 11 a.m. and noon-4 p.m. Weapons must be brought to the range unloaded, no one under 17 years old will be allowed to shoot without parental or guardian supervision, and proper ID is required. Deer food plot seminar

LULING - David Pichon, County Agent with the LSU AgCenter’s Cooperative Extension Service in St. Charles Parish, has announced that the LSU AgCenter will present a Deer Food Plot Seminar on Tuesday, August 24. The seminar will be held at the VFW Hall on Angus Drive in Luling. The doors will open at 5 p.m. followed with a meal at 6 p.m. The program will begin around 7 p.m. The focus of the seminar will be on Fall Food Plot Plantings for Whitetail Deer as well as Soil Fertilization and Deer Health and Management.

Donations of $10 will be accepted to help pay for the seminar costs. There will also be a raffle for a gun as well as a 50/50 drawing. There is no pre-registration for the seminar. Literary seniors wanted for anthology

ST. CHARLES PARISH - The St. Charles Council on Aging and Y.M.C.A Educational Services present The Literary Circle of Friends group. The group will meet every Friday from 10-11:30 a.m. at 145 Angus Drive in Luling. Please call (985)785-1981 for transportation or lunch reservation.

The group is now promoting a Seniors Anthology Project that will feature a collection of short stories, poetry, personal essays, artwork, book reviews, quotes, journalism pieces and current event views. Kids invited to dance for hope

LULING - A “Dancin for HOPE” youth dance will be held in memory of Kyle Bergeron on August 20 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Luling. Admission will be $10 per person. All proceeds will benefit The Leukemia Lymphoma Society for a Cure. The dance is open to kids ages 10-15. Pizza, drinks, snacks and a photo booth will be available at the dance. The St. Charles Parish Registrar of Voters Office would like to inform citizens that early voting begins Aug. 14, then Aug. 16 through Aug. 21 for the First Party Primary Congressional Election to be held Aug. 28.

Jambalaya & bake sale will benefit Lou Gehrig’s disease

HAHNVILLE - Each day in the United States, about 14 people are diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and are left with only three to five years to live. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is an incurable fatal neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness, resulting in paralysis.
Come out and support the ALS Jambalaya and Bake Sale Fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 13 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Parish Courthouse lobby. The event costs $5 per plate and all proceeds raised will benefit ALS.
Most of those who develop the disease are between 40 and 70 years of age. The average expected survival time for those suffering from ALS is three to five years. At any given time, approximately 30,000 people in the United States are living with the disease. The cause of ALS remains unclear and no cure exists.

First step to state crown begins at St. Charles Festival

DESTREHAN - The 52nd Annual St. Charles Parish Festival Pageant will be held on August 8 at 3 p.m. at Destrehan High School. The 52nd Queen will represent St. Charles Parish at the Louisiana Sugar Queen Pageant in New Iberia in September and the LAFF Queen of Queens Pageant in February 2011 in Baton Rouge.

Proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Both the Children’s and the Senior Divisions are open to all Louisiana residents and the Senior Divisions are a contracted title.

Contestants will be judged on an interview, stage introduction and evening gown competition.

HHS invites freshman, parents to orientation

HAHNVILLE - All incoming Hahnville High School freshmen are encouraged to attend “Tiger Kick-Off 2010” on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at HHS. The event is a one-day orientation for all incoming 9th grade students that is led by the HHS students and staff. Students should arrive between 8:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. for registration and have transportation available for 2 p.m. dismissal.

Lunch will be provided. Students will get acquainted with their student mentors, meet teachers and administration, tour the school, learn the 2010 kick-off dance and get “expert tips.” Please dress in comfortable, casual clothing (jeans or shorts, comfortable shoes, etc.) as this will be a day filled with activities that will require movement.

Parents of incoming freshmen are invited to attend a parent informational meeting in the Hahnville High School auditorium from 9-10 a.m.

Blood drive offers chance to win tickets to Saints vs. Vikings

LULING - The American Legion #131 will sponsor a blood drive with Ochsner Blood Bank on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 103 Milling Ave. in Luling. HHS class of ‘80 to hold 30-year reunion

NEW ORLEANS - Hahnville High School Class of 1980 will hold their 30 year reunion on the weekend of August 6 and 7 in New Orleans. It’s going to be a great time! All graduates, teachers and friends of the class of ‘80 are invited so if you are part of this group, please make plans to come.

On Friday August 6th we will hold a special graduate party at the French Market Restaurant hosted by our very own Glynn “Tyree” Boyd who promises to make this a night to remember. The restaurant is located on 1001 Decatur St and the party is from 9 till. The cost is $20 at the door.

On Saturday August 7th, the main event will be held at Ernst Café (600 South Peters) from 8 till 12. Graduates from across the country are flying in including “These Boots are made for Walking” quartet and the “Freaky Deak Girls” who say they have been practicing so don’t miss out on the fun. The cost is $65.00 per person and includes open bar, appetizers and a Cajun dinner buffet.
