“I’ve had a lot of homeowners upset with this office - they aren’t happy with the large increase in property taxes they got this year. But there’s nothing the parish can do about it. I encourage property owners to write the governor, the tax commissioner and the state legislature to ask for tax relief.”

As residential housing throughout St. Charles Parish continues to expand, local developers are facing a slew of problems heading into the New Year as they attempt to accommodate the sudden and continuing housing needs of residents since hurricane Katrina ravaged southeast Louisiana.

Vernell Chadwick Stipe, age 37, on Jan. 12, 2007. He leaves to cherish his parents, Olevia Stipe and Henry Lewis; children Vernell Jr., Jia-Mona and Brandon Mayers; brothers Reginald and Roderick Lewis and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at Children of Israel Baptist Church in Killona at 11 a.m. Passover at Killona Fire House.

Player of the Week
This week's Off to College and Beyond Player of the Week is Xavier guard and DHS grad Mark Stewart who knocked down 13 three-pointers in the Gold Rush's two victories this past week. He led the team with 28 points (7 of his scores three-pointers) to go along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in the teams' victory over Spring Hill last Thursday. He also had 18 points (all of them on 6 three-pointers), 2 assists, a rebounds and a steal in the team's victory over Loyola on Saturday.
