Aubrey Merrell Batson, Sr. passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14 in Houma. A U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of WWII. Husband of the late Sylvia Mercedes Batson. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Batson. Father of Peggy Falla and husband Joe Falla; John Batson and girlfriend Karen Peters; the late Aubrey M. Batson Jr. William (Billy) Batson, Sue Tesch, Anita Gaubert and Mary Massengale. Father-in-law of Elaine peters Batson. Brother of Eugen McFarren and Vonda Morton. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Age 80, a native of Earle, Arkansas and resident in Houma. Visitation was at Alexander Funeral Home Norco at 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday Jan 16. A private Graveside Service followed the visitation. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Terrebone House Asst. living, Terrebone General Hospital and the Gulf State L.T.A.C unit, all of Houma Alexander Funeral Home of Norco.

As of this writing, 15 murders have been reported in New Orleans in the first 21 days of the year. At that rate the city is on its way to over 350 murders in 2007. There were three more shootings over the weekend, but as far as we know all three victims remain alive.

Editor: I hope everybody votes for the school millage renewal that you talked about in the Herald-Guide. Heaven forbid we have to shut the schools and fire the teachers. That wouldn’t do at all.

Going up! LSU plans to raise ticket prices for the upcoming season. If approved by the university’s board of supervisors, the base price of a single ticket will jump from $36 to $40 for non-SEC games - with premier games costing $45.

Player of the week
This week's Off to College and Beyond Player of the Week is LSU swimmer and DHS grad Kevin Braud who won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.08 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.36 at the Texas A&M meet on Saturday. He also placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.83) and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.07).
