They are the faces that at first glance appear to blend in with the rest of the world. Although sometimes unknown, they are the true American heroes.

Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students showcased their science knowledge at a special Science Night held recently, at Lakewood Elementary. Science Night is part of an innovative program, "Putting Students in the Driver's Seat: An exploration of Motion and Force," that was awarded $1,960 by Dow's Educational Enhancement Grant last year.

DeJean
Melvin A. DeJean entered peacefully into eternal rest at River Regions Hospice House on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 after a lengthy battle with cancer for the past 10 years. He was 92 years old. He was a native of Lutcher and a former resident of Norco, La. for 63 years. He was the husband of the late Inez Simon DeJean by first marriage and the late Grace DeJean by second marriage. Father and father-in-law of Patricia DeJean Costa, Mel and Carolyn W. DeJea and Dennis and Martin DeJean. Brother of Ethel DeJean Hayes and the late George, Percy, Dudley, Elwood, Roy and Harry DeJean and Gloria DeJean Brignac and Shirley DeJean Knott. He was the son of the late George and Virginia Duhe DeJean. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 30 great great grandchildren. Melvin was a retiree of Shell Oil Company in Norco. Relatives and friends of the family were invited to attend funeral services at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on May 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. Entombment at St. Peter Catholic Church Cemetery, Reserve, La., along side his beloved wife Inez. H.C. Alexander Funeral Home of Norco in charge of arrangements.

Arrests
• Karen Falcon, 53, of 17 Bonura Dr., St. Rose, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and illegal discharge of a firearm on May 8. Sheriff Champagne reports that the above subject was arrested following an altercation with her husband. During the altercation the subject allegedly cut the victim on legs with a kitchen knife and fire a shotgun into the wall of their residence.

Jazzfest 2006 was the best ever. It even rained Sunday and the show went on unabated. That indicated that nothing can deter music lovers from actively appreciating the rhythms and sounds of some of the greatest bands and singers in the nation.
