In a rare move, Parish President Albert Laque vetoed an ordinance to approve a five home subdivision in an area designated wetlands along Highway 90, citing a propensity for flooding.

Local residents were startled when an explosion at the 1,000 acre Valero St. Charles Refinery shook up homes for miles Saturday night around 11:30 p.m. The fire and explosion shot into the air from a unit that is used to produce diesel fuel causing flames to shoot more than 100 feet.

~ Sheriff Champagne reports that the subjects below were stopped for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed the subjects to be in possession of crack cocaine.
• Edward Potts, Jr., 47, of 127 Mott Ln., Des Allemands, was arrested for poss. of SCH II CDS to wit crack cocaine and no seat belt at Tinney & Kinler, Boutte, on May 13.
• Charlotte Pierre, 42, of 1730 LA 52, Luling, was arrested and charged with poss. of SCH II CDS to wit crack cocaine, poss. of drug paraphernalia, open alcoholic beverage in vehicle and SCSO attachment at Timney & Kinler, Boutte, on May 13.
• Leroy Pinckney, 46, of 726 King St., Charleston, Sc., was arrested and charged with poss. of SCH II CDS to wit crack cocaine at Timney & Kinler, Boutte, on May 13.

While in Colorado this past weekend, some 1,600 miles away from the politics of New Orleans, I was surprised Saturday night when television programming was interrupted with breaking news that Ray Nagin had been re-elected as Mayor of the City of New Orleans. A week earlier, while in Washington, DC, the mayoral debate was carried live in that city. For good or bad, the whole world watched this election.
