I have previously written in this column about the destructive spending practices of the federal government. I recently came across the text of a speech that David Walker, the Comptroller General of the United States, gave to an American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) audience on September 8. Please give serious attention to the following excerpts from his speech.

Cataouche fishing isn’t backing down. On Sunday, part-time fishing guide Michael Becnel took friends Lauren Lemmon (top) and Adam Lorio fishing on Lake Cataouche to catch these slab-sized crappie. “I’ve never seen action like this -- ever!” said Becnel who lives in Luling and works for Dow Chemical. Becnel has fished the St. Charles Parish lake all his life but has never caught fish like this in the brackish-water lake.

Election signs for parish president, councilman and many other sought-after government positions have popped up as political barricades alongside most of the roadways in St. Charles Parish, but if you’re a student or teacher at Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools then you’ve noticed that there’s a whole other battle going on - the spirited sprint to the throne in the race to reign as homecoming king and queen.
