Louisiana's class of 2008 is more college ready than any of the state's previous graduating classes, but while the state as a whole may have excelled in the ACT, St. Charles Parish took a step backwards.

Although it's too early to tell where Hurricane Gustav will make landfall, Tab Troxler, director of the parish’s Emergency Operations Center, says he's a little nervous about this one. In fact, he has already activated his family’s emergency plan in case they have to evacuate.
|Parish WWII veterans being recruited for special trip

St. Charles Parish’s World War II veterans are being recruited to take a trip they'll never forget. Louisiana Honor Air wants to fly veterans to Washington, D.C. to view the World War II Monument and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

LULING - The Bible Center Church will host a 12-week Ladies Bible Study Aug. 25 through Nov. 19. at the church located at 422 Barton Ave. in Luling.
This semester’s topic will focus on the book of Daniel.
Workbook cost is $16.30. The class meets Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

|Teen dance in Paradis Aug. 22

PARADIS - The Paradis Volunteer Fire Department will host a teen dance on Aug. 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 807 Barber Rd. in Paradis.
The dance is open to ages 12 to 17 and admission is $5. Concessions are available.

Destrehan cruised to the Class 5A state championship last year, finishing the season with a perfect 15-0 record that included the demolition of every single opponent they faced in last year's playoffs.

Even though Hahnville head man Lou Valdin only returns four overall starters from last year's team, he's not worried. In fact, Valdin feels that while his squad will be young, there is enough talent on both sides of the ball for his team to be competitive.

The St. Charles Art Guild is amongst the oldest and still functioning art guilds in the metropolitan New Orleans area. It was established in 1968 by Mariann Burns, Laura Wilk and Claire Van Wirt. Charter members were Travis Pitchford and nationally known Mississippi mud clay artist Lorraine Gendron.

Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux said his Wildcats’ performance against Barbe Friday night might have been his team’s very best of the season. High praise when speaking of an undefeated team, to be sure; few witnesses, however, would likely argue.
