Congressional districts to change in state
February 24, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Louisiana’s Legislature undoubtedly will have a difficult assignment when it meets in March and April to define the state’s new congressional districts. The 2010 Census population figures reduce the number of congressmen our state is entitled to from seven to six.

Louisiana has had a lot interruptions in efforts to save its coast in recent years. There have been lots of hurricanes. And last but not least the BP oil spill.

It’s understandable why our population grows
February 11, 2011 at 9:36 am
St. Charles is an unusual parish. With some 85 percent wetlands, it still has many suburban areas that regularly attract increased census figures.

Mighty Mississippi can be dangerous
February 03, 2011 at 1:08 pm
The Mighty Mississippi is a great advantage economically to St. Charles. But it can be a deadly danger to its citizens.

Law enforcers doing a good job
January 27, 2011 at 9:37 am
It’s hard to feel good about a reduction in the crime rate because any crime at all is a bad thing. But St. Charles Parish is going against the grain of many areas by reducing its overall crime in 2010 by 5.8 percent from 2009. Total numbers fell from 2,456 to 2,313.

Open primaries would help other states, too
January 21, 2011 at 9:23 am
A possible solution to our political partisanship problems is to adopt open primaries nationwide. In that way, candidates would be more likely to preach and vote according to their own honest opinions of the best way to govern rather than the way their party wants it to be.

Author highlights slave revolt
January 14, 2011 at 9:41 am
One of the greatest slave revolts in history took place right here in the River Parishes. And it began on Jan. 8, 1811 which was Twelfth Night, the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of carnival here in Louisiana.

1811 slave revolt made history here
January 07, 2011 at 9:39 am
Commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the largest slave revolt in U. S. history will begin at Destrehan Plantation Saturday. It will start a year-long observation that will recall the events when more than 200 enslaved African-Americans marched downriver from a plantation in LaPlace for two days to a plantation in Kenner.

Its time to finish restoring our coast
December 29, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Several years ago, it was predicted we would be beyond the point of no return in saving the Louisiana coast if a lot of work to restore it were not done within 10 years. Here it is almost the beginning of 2011 and very little has been done.

Christmas should be a simple celebration
December 22, 2010 at 10:35 am
Christmas is upon us and we wish everyone a merry one. It is the season of the year when love takes over and doubts and other questionable attitudes are shoved aside.

December 17, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Chemical plants have been a blessing to St. Charles Parish. They have brought prosperity to the parish and they have brought to our area many wonderful people we would never have known otherwise.

Public needs to decide on recycling
December 10, 2010 at 9:14 am

Norco death beyond comprehension
December 03, 2010 at 9:19 am
It was sad indeed this week for police to discover the remains of a 78-year-old woman who was brutally murdered some three weeks ago in her Norco home. She was described as a sweet lady who minded her own business and was kind to everyone.

Thanks

Earmarks should be banned
November 19, 2010 at 9:17 am
Suddenly . . . earmarks are claimed to be not such a bad thing. Louisiana’s two U. S. senators have supported them somewhat.

Proposed boat launch would be an asset
November 12, 2010 at 9:05 am
With three-fourths of St. Charles Parish being wetlands, it is understandable why a lot of citizens would want a first class boat launching ramp where it has been planned on U. S. 90 near the Davis Freshwater Diversion.

Democracy prevails in election Tuesday
November 04, 2010 at 3:23 pm
It’s the economy, stupid. We hope that’s the outlook of President Barack Obama after the Republicans gained a majority in the House and almost in the Senate Tuesday.

Closing Willowdale would be tragic loss
October 22, 2010 at 11:06 am
The planned closing of Willowdale Country Club in Luling on November 1comes as a shock and great disappointment to many residents of St. Charles Parish. It is a happening they feared but did not definitely foresee.
