St. Charles beauty pageant seeking contestants

NORCO - The St. Charles Parish Pageant Festival Committee is seeking contestants for the 54th annual pageant “Fun in the Sun” to be held on Sunday, Aug. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart School in Norco.

Contestants must be 17-23 for the Miss Division and 13-16 for the Teen Division. All contestants must reside in St. Charles Parish. The newly crowned queens, along with their courts, will receive scholarships. The 54th Miss St. Charles Parish Festival Queen will also compete in the Louisiana Queen Sugar Pageant in New Iberia in September.

The St. Charles Parish Festival Committee is looking for “Sweethearts”, girls between the ages of 3-12 interested in escorting our Miss and Teen Contestants. An informational meeting for sweethearts will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the K.C. Home in Norco.

Free job skills training: wireless setup

DESTREHAN - The East Regional Library is offering a free job skills training class on wireless setup from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on July 30. The aim of the course is to assist the unprepared to join today’s technology-heavy work force.
The program is run in conjunction with the State Library of Louisiana.

The library is located at 160 W. Campus Dr. in Destrehan.

Special Athletes fundraiser

HARAHAN - The Special Athletes of St. Charles are holding a fundraiser on Monday, July 30 from 4-9 p.m. They will be hosting a laser tag event at Adventure Quest Laser Tag in Elmwood. This will be a “Last Blast Before Class”. Children will be able to play unlimited laser tag, bumper cars and mini golf for five hours for a cost of $20.
Adventure Quest Laser Tag Elmwood is located at 1200 S Clearview Parkway Suite 1106 in Harahan.

Adolescents only dance

DES ALLEMANDS - The Des Allemands Volunteer Fire Department will host a dance on Saturday, July 28 from 7-11 p.m. for ages 10-16.

Entry is $5 and concessions will be sold. Music will be provided by DJ Magic.

Free children’s theatre workshop

NORCO -The River Region Drama Guild will hold its Summer Children’s Theatre Workshop on July 23-31 continuing August 1-2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the River Region Performing Arts and Cultural Center, 15146 River Road in Norco.

The workshop is open to young people grades 5 thru 12 and will be free of charge. Preregistration is not required.
The workshop will focus on ensemble building, trust, observation, self-confidence, concentration, imagination and creativity. The drama guild will introduce the fundamental basics of theater and provide a well-rounded academic, educational experience of drama for all.

Everyone, regardless of ability and experience, will be given an opportunity to be involved. The final evening will be a public performance demonstrating the skills learned in the workshop.

Hunger Games lock-in

DESTREHAN - The East Regional Library will hold a Hunger Games-themed lock-in beginning on Saturday, July 21 at 7 p.m. and running until Sunday, July 22 at 7 a.m.

The lock-in will include story inspired activities such as a Life or Death Relay, Cornucopia Challenge, Camouflage Station, Cinna’s Spa, creating Mockingjay jewelry, The Hob and a Tribute Fashion Factory.

Movies will be shown and computer access will be provided to participants.

Refreshments will also be provided.

The library is located at 160 W. Campus Dr. in Destrehan.
A permission slip must be signed by a parent and returned to the library by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 20 for all participants. Permission slips are available at all library branches and online at www.myscpl.org/teens.

BOUTTE - The Cajun Village Resale Store will have a sale to benefit the Arc of St. Charles on Saturday, July 21 from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The sale will take place at 13432 Highway 90 in Boutte.
Items to be included in the sale are clothing, shoes, toys, furniture, books and other items.

Free gas giveaway

BOUTTE - King Jesus Ministries will be giving away free gas again.

Last month, King Jesus Ministries announced that they would be giving away thousands of dollars of free gas this summer. They reached out to the community and had their first free gas giveaway in June.

Their next free gas giveaway will be Sunday, July 15 after the morning worship service beginning at 10 a.m. at the Shell Station, located at 14252 Highway 90 in Boutte. They will be giving away $15 of free gas per vehicle until they have given away at least $1,000 of gas. Also, they will doing free car washes and have free barbecue available across the highway from the Shell station at their church, which is located at 14201 Highway 90 in Boutte.

LULING - The Bible Center Church at 422 Barton Avenue in Luling is hosting a week of activities beginning Monday, July 9 and running through Friday, July 13 from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

Each day your children can become a part of history as they see, hear, touch and even taste what it was like to live in Babylon. They will explore the marketplace shops, visit Daniel, take part in games, dance to lively Bible songs and sample tasty tidbits while they discover more about Daniel’s adventures in Babylon.

Hunter education classes

KILLONA - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department will offer a two-day hunter education class on Friday, July 6 from 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturday, July 7 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
The classes will be held at the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s firing range at 5061 LA 3127 in Killona.

State law requires that all individuals born on or after September 1, 1969 obtain a hunting license prior to hunting in Louisiana.
The course will cover such topics as firearm safety, survival, first aid and wildlife identification.

22nd annual Parish Independence Day celebration

LULING - St. Charles Parish will hold its 22nd annual Independence Day Celebration from 6 until 9 p.m. July 3 at the West Bank Bridge Park at 13825 River Road in Hahnville.
The event will feature a performance by New Orleans band the Topcats, a patriotic balloon-twisting clown, food and more.

The band is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., with a fireworks extravaganza to begin at 9 p.m.
A military aircraft flyover will be part of the opening ceremony, which is set to begin at 6:15 p.m.
Seven local groups will sell food and drinks at the event, to include frozen treats, lemonade, nachos, Frito pies, jambalaya, corn dogs, french fries, pulled pork sandwiches, watermelon, hamburgers, hot dogs and snoballs.Vendors will be located in the West Bank Bridge Park’s concession stand and permanent shelters.

Volleyball Camp at Hahnville High School

HAHNVILLE - Hahnville Volleyball Camp will be held from June 19-21. Different age groups will be present with 5th and 6th grades practicing together from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 7th and 8th grades practicing together from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
