High energy worship attracts young audience March 01, 2006 at 12:02 pm A new worship service in Houma called “Adore” combines music and lighting like a rock concert - but with Jesus as the star. Although the worship is Catholic-based and puts Jesus in the Eucharist on center stage, the spiritual concert is free and open to the public. |
| Trash on highways unsightly, dangerous March 01, 2006 at 12:00 pm I bet in a post Katrina world, there isn’t a single driver in southeast Louisiana who doesn’t have at least one story about debris falling from a trash truck either striking their vehicle, caused them to take dangerously evasive actions, or striking something on the roadway. With tons and tons of Hurricane Katrina trash being hauled to landfills, most all of which are located on the west bank just over the Jefferson and St. Charles Parish lines, it seems as though all roads to the landfills lead through St. Charles Parish, even from parishes far to our east. All of this has local residents experiencing a much larger percentage of driving challenges than any other community. |

| Mardi Gras serves a great purpose March 01, 2006 at 11:59 am Mardi Gras has come and gone and must go down in history as one of the most successful. Not that the floats were more beautiful than ever. Not that the costumes were more dazzling and spectacular. Not that the beads were glitzier. |

| Letters to the Editor March 01, 2006 at 11:54 am Don’t demolish old school building The purpose of this letter is to voice our concern over the recent decision by the St. Charles Parish School Board to demolish the Luling Elementary building on Ellington, one of the few remaining historical landmarks in St. Charles Parish. |

| Louisiana must heal from within March 01, 2006 at 11:52 am The biggest danger Louisiana faces right now isn't the specter of more hurricanes slamming into us from the Gulf. It is the divisions within us that were driven to the forefront by the twin disasters last fall. How soon and how well the entire state of Louisiana recovers and is made whole will be determined by the degree to which our citizenry wants to be unified. |

| People in South Louisiana are different March 01, 2006 at 11:51 am Our people and state were exposed to public opinion by people all over the world like never before after Hurricane Katrina opened our doors to universal inspection. |

| The greatest free show in the World February 22, 2006 at 1:41 pm It has been billed as the greatest free show on earth and few would question the great times experienced by participating in Mardi Gras. but, is it really free and what do we have to gain from it? |

| West bank of parish remains vulnerable February 22, 2006 at 1:40 pm The special legislative session that ended last week did a good job of compromising. Instead of forming one levee board for the entire metropolitan area, it formed two, one for each side of the river. |
|
| Government services come at a high price February 22, 2006 at 1:35 pm The federal government’s work in restoring order after Hurricane Katrina shows that it is no match for the private enterprise system in efficiency of operation. |

| Dear God, By Kids February 15, 2006 at 1:27 pm Dear God, Are you really invisible or is that just a trick? Lucy Dear God, I want to be just like my daddy when I get big but not with so much hair all over. Sam |

| Making good communities great February 15, 2006 at 1:20 pm During a victory celebration on February 23 at Destrehan Plantation, the United Way of St. Charles will announce the results of the 2006 campaign that will fund the many agencies that contribute so much to our quality of life. After a year of tremendous demands on the non-profit service providers, the success of this year’s pledges will have great impact on a post-Katrina St. Charles Parish. |

| Coastal restoration work needed NOW! February 15, 2006 at 1:19 pm Before Hurricane Katrina, the coast of Louisiana was disappearaing at a rate of up to 50 square miles a year. And now the news is out that, in one day, Katrina took another 118 square miles of coast away. |

| Letters from Nigeria getting more frequent February 15, 2006 at 1:17 pm The first came a few years ago. Then another showed up a few weeks later. The frequency increased gradually and this past month I must have received at least 15. I didn’t answer any of them but was tempted to several times. |

| Blocking offshore leases may get attention February 09, 2006 at 12:12 pm Gov. Kathleen Blanco is getting aggressive in her efforts to attract more federal government financial support in our efforts to rebound after Hurricane Katrina. Now she has threatened to block the sale of offshore oil leases off the coast of Louisiana in August if we don’t get a larger share of the revenue. |

| 133 years of taking notes February 09, 2006 at 12:11 pm Much has happened in St. Charles Parish in the more than thirteen decades. We have gone from a sparsely populated agricultural community to being one of the largest ports in the world. And during that time, one business has witnessed this evolution first hand. |
|
| Trash Bash February 09, 2006 at 12:10 pm Admittedly, we have had a lot of Hurricane Katrina-related trash in addition to regular trash to pick up in St. Charles Parish since the storm tore up thousands of trees and branches and portions of many structures. So it is somewhat understandable that we would have somewhat of a trash problem. |

Viewers around the country protest obscene programing on basic cable February 09, 2006 at 11:51 am Several programs currently on basic cable television should be considered pornography, according to the Parents Television Council, yet they are part of the general basic programming offered by Cox Cable. We will not go over the details here, but explicit examples of obscene programming currently being aired on MTV, Fox FX, and other basic cable stations can be reviewed on the web site www.parentstv.org. |
