Beginning in November, the United Way of St. Charles Parish starts taking calls and referrals on disadvantaged families throughout the parish. By the time the holidays hit full stride, United Way Director of Community Impact Kacy Kernan said, they have more than 100 cases. To make these Christmases, United Way turns to the community.

When members of the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish landed in the Honduran city of Tegucigulpa, they weren’t there to tour Mayan ruins. In fact, their journey took them far from the city lights, up mountain roads and into the small town of Nacaome.

Veronica Roth, author of Divergent, creates a perfectly balanced and structured society that consists of five groups divided strictly on how the brain works: Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor. At age sixteen, all members of the society have to choose which faction they will live in to begin their journey as adults. A mind stimulation is given to each inductee before the Choosing Ceremony to help determine where they would be most fit.
|Luling students help Santa decorate hospital Christmas tree

Pre-K and kindergarten students from Luling Elementary helped spread the holiday cheer by decorating the hospital’s holiday tree with handmade ornaments. The tree will remain up outside the Oyster’s Pearl throughout the holiday season and is a wonderful showcase of the students’ creativity.

Valero St. Charles Refinery and its employees donated a combined $31,523 garnered from its 12th Annual Fishing Tournament. Valero donated the money to the United Way of St. John.

Superintendent Felecia Gomez-Walker likened the Dec. 4 Student of the Year awards ceremony to the Oscars. After every school selects a student of the year, committees have the task of picking three - at the elementary, middle, and high school levels - as the district’s students of the year. In a school district ranked fifth in the state, choosing among the best students is no easy task.
