|St. Charles 4-H'ers gather for LARGEST camp turnout - ever

A group of 41 members, counselors and adults from St. Charles Parish recently attended 4-H Summer Camp. The camp, the 4-H Grant Walker Educational Center, is located in Grant Parish about 25 miles north of Alexandria in Pollock. Other parishes attending with St. Charles were: St. John, Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemine, East Baton Rouge and St. Landry. This was one of the largest summer camp groups for these parishes due to the addition of St. Landry. Administrators were fearful that the Metro area parishes would not bring as many kids due to the destruction of the area by Hurricane Katrina but the Metro Parishes each brought nearly their regular numbers!

Garrett Fortin is the son of Sharon and Michael Fortin of Destrehan. He is a member of the DHS National Honors Society, president of the Destrehan Honors Scholars, president of the Literary Club, treasurer of Mu Alpha Theta,and team captain of Quiz Bowl. Garrett boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Shell Pipeline Company LP sponsored a day for employees to give back to the community by offering them the opportunity to volunteer their time to help out St. Bernard residents trying to recover from the damages left by the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Young people from across Louisiana were named 4-H State and Blue Ribbon winners at the recently held 4-H University contests in Baton Rouge. The event, formerly known as 4-H Short Course, was the 92th annual gathering of 4-H members from across the state. Members competed in over 40 different project related contests. Approximately 1600 members and 200 volunteers participated in the activities.
