Election signs for parish president, councilman and many other sought-after government positions have popped up as political barricades alongside most of the roadways in St. Charles Parish, but if you’re a student or teacher at Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools then you’ve noticed that there’s a whole other battle going on - the spirited sprint to the throne in the race to reign as homecoming king and queen.

For many years I’ve envied the tourists and vacationers that I watched on one of cable television’s most-viewed networks, the Travel Channel, as they marveled at the monuments of our ancestors like the mysteriously-built Egyptian pyramids or the historically-delicate coliseums of Italy.

If you’re anything like me then watching your weight is a constant struggle, and since I’ve packed on 15 pounds since my eye surgery I’m back on the scale carefully calculating everything that I eat - especially since I go back under the knife this month for a second surgery.
