Local soccer stars named

The 2006 All-District team was named and several local athletes were standouts on the list.

For Destrehan High School, forward Donald DeLatte, midfielders Justin Weyenberg and Robbie Anderson, defender T.J Favaloro and goalkeeper Chris Tyree were named first team.

Last year, Hahnville's season came to an emotional jolt, losing to St. Paul's in the regionals 4-2. With the disappointing loss, the Tigers finished the season with an overall record of 31-4, an undefeated district season and a district championship. But, as always, they were looking for more.

With a spot in the Sweet 16 waiting for the winner, Destrehan Lady Wildcats and Hahnville's Lady Tigers met in the quarterfinal match at Hahnville last Thursday night.

Destrehan Lady Wildcats clinched their first win in a bi-district play-off game on last Thursday against Covington. They defeated them with a score of 78-54. However, part two of this journey wasn't so easy when they faced their second opponent on Monday of this week. This game was high-energy for both teams. In the last seconds of this game, the Lady Wildcats managed to squeeze by with a win beating Ellender by one point 44-43.

In Hahnville's last district game against Destrehan, Reginald Lumar led his team to a sweet victory with a score of 59-45. Lumar with 22 points opened up the game with three pointers back to back. His defense was untouchable and his drive right down the middle often times was unstoppable.

Only one more win would top last season's run by the Destrehan Wildcats. That would be winning the state championship. Last year's improbable run, in which the unranked Wildcats fell to Jesuit 8-2, was the second time in three years that Destrehan made to the final. In order to repeat that performance, they will have make it there without All-State MVP and first round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves Beau Jones.

The Hahnville wrestling team competed at the Patriot Duel Tournament on Saturday February, 4.

For the first time in school history, the team walked away with a 1st place team trophy.

At a recent gathering at St. Charles School Board, local footbal standouts from Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools made the college selections final, signing their letter of intent play at the next level.

The battle started minutes into the game with the Lady Patriots taking over the floor. Good passing, clean defense, and with number 22, Dumas, hitting shot after shot, the Patriots were on their way to victory. However, the Lady Tigers had other plans for the night.

Friday night at Tiger Stadium, the Hahnville Tigers squeezed past John Ehret winning the game by one point with 1.1 seconds left in the game. The final being 54-53.

The undefeated Lady Wildcats soccer team closed out their season on Friday, February 3, at West Jeff Stadium against John Ehret shutting them out 12-0.

After committing to the University of Michigan several weeks ago, Destrehan standout Jai Eugene had a change of heart and decided to sign with LSU. At 5'11" and 185 lbs with electric speed, the blue chip recruit was pursued as a cornerback by all of the top college football programs in the nation-from Miami to LSU.
