For Wayne Baloney and A.M. Charles, providing an opportunity for young men to play a sport that they love was an easy endeavor. As members of the First Baptist Church of Paradis, these two men, thirteen years ago, made an idea come alive as they established their Annual Christian Basketball Tournament.

In early July, the city of Ames, Iowa landed the role as host for the 2006 National Special Olympic Games, and this first ever event gave many talented athletes the opportunity to become a part of history by representing Louisiana in a variety of competitions.

Life for Trey Montgomery has changed tremendously since he left the halls of Destrehan High School in May of 2005. His first year at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama gave him a better opportunity to see what life will require from him to be successful.

At first glance, Douglas Jeffery Gilder, may appear to be different than everyone else. DJ who was diagnosed with autism at age 2 ˝, does face challenges that most would find hard or impossible to overcome. But this exceptional athlete does not let those challenges stand in his way.

The St. Charles Striders are making headlines once again as they are scheduled to leave for the AAU Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Virginia on July 29 and return on August 6. When asked if this trip would be a welcome vacation, Coach Ulysses Frontha said, "It's work for the coaches as usual. The kids are expected to do great in the Junior Olympics."

What began in the fall of 1997, with a dramatic finish of a double overtime championship game followed by a sudden death shootout to decide a winner in the boys U-10, St. Charles Parish Soccer Tournament came to a climax this past May of 2006 at the Louisiana State Soccer Championship in Alexandria.

Former Destrehan High School star Randy Roth has been turning heads in the minors.
He learned the essential skills needed for a potential big league career growing up in the parish. Recently, at the Midwest League All-Star game, Roth won the home run derby.

With summer in full swing, Hill Heights Country Club's swim team, the Hurricanes, are hard at work practicing, swimming and competing at local swim meets. Head Coach, Nicole Matherne, says despite their recent losses she is happy with the progress of her swimmers. "We have lost our first two meets but the kids are improving with every practice and every meet. And that is what is important to me," said Matherne.

St. Charles Parish continues to produce some of the best players in the state. Shining at the collegiate and sometimes professional levels, Hanhville and Destrehan remain hotbeds of great baseball athletes.

"We had a tough time with our first loss, but we are striving to win our future meets," said the head coach.

Luling native Nathan Southard made the jump this week that few, if any, ever get to make. The St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the Major League Baseball Draft. Although he was selected in the 17th round of the draft, Southard's prowess at Tulane University proved more than adequate to make the large leap to the pros.
