With summer in full swing, Hill Heights Country Club's swim team, the Hurricanes, are hard at work practicing, swimming and competing at local swim meets.

Following their recent loss to Bellemeade Country Club, 589-398, Willowdale Swim Team Head Coach, Carroll Bohnsack hopes to rebound and take the win against the Southern Yacht Club next Wednesday. "We had a tough time with our first loss, but we are striving to win our future meets," said the head coach.

Dayton Bordelon, a 17 year- old golfer from Hahnville High School, is keeping his dream of playing at the college level, possibly professionally, alive by playing competively during the summer.
|Southard drafted by Cardinals

Luling native Nathan Southard made the jump this week that few, if any, ever get to make. The St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the Major League Baseball Draft. Although he was selected in the 17th round of the draft, Southard's prowess at Tulane University proved more than adequate to make the large leap to the pros.

The St. Charles Striders, a summer track team known to produce national champs such as Jaii Scott, long jump; Chris Richards, long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200 meters; Traun Smith, triple jump; and Jarvis Harris, triple jump.

Although area high schools have recently let out and ending the baseball seasons for the Hahnville and Destrehan, summer is baseball is in full swing, as American Legion Baseball kicks off this week in St. Charles Parish.

In an effort to give girls a chance to play competitive softball outside of school and the recreation department, Kenneth Vial, head girls softball coach at Hahnville High School, gathered a handful of local girls and created a competitive softball team called the St. Charles Hurricanes.

The recreation department's summer baseball teams are already busy hitting home runs, and sliding into bases. "We are on our 8th game this week," said Robert Brown of the St. Charles Recreation Department. The recreation department offers competitive baseball teams for residents between the ages of 5 and 18 years-old.

St. Charles Parish continues to produce world-class athletes, and at the recent National Football League Draft that became even more evident, as former Hahnville High School Quarterback Dawan Landry made the jump to the National Football League following a standout career at Georgia Tech. Taken in the fifth round, Landry was selected 146 overall.

With the loss of several leading players from last year, the Destrehan Wildcats managed to complete their season taking second in the district. They entered into the playoffs tackling one game at a time.

Coach Frank Cazeaux had announced his intention to step down as head coach earlier in season. Instead of miracle run through the state baseball tournament, Cazeaux and the Tiger's were sent home via the Jesuit Blue Jays.

Hahnville High School's Girls’ Softball Team finished first in the district this past season with Destrehan High School's Girls’ Softball Team coming in at a very close second. Both teams shined during the regular season and several students from each school have been chosen to represent their teams in the 2006 All-District Girls’ Softball Team.

Winner of 171 lb. weight class at the state finals, Levi Gruwell began his competitive wrestling career when he won the Junior Wrestling State Championships at age eight. From there he grew into a victorious wrestler, competing this past year at the State Wrestling Championships on February 17 and 18 at the Ponchatrain Center in Kenner and wrestling his way to number one in his weight class."

After a dominating year, Hahnville High School Boys' Golf Team traveled to Shreveport to defend their state title. Held at Olde Oaks Golf Club, the tournament was a multiple day event against the finest golfers in Louisiana.
