| MLK Levee March January 16, 2012 at 10:08 am Celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. by marching from the Hale Boggs Bridge to the Eual J. Landry Gym on Jan. 16. The Pilgrimage March will begin at 10 a.m. and a commemorative program will start at the gym at noon. The program will include songs, speeches and narrations. Prophetess Roselind Martin of Saving Grace Ministry in Destrehan will be a guest speaker. The event is sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Organization of St. Charles Parish. “Our organization is really trying to keep the dream alive so that young people know there are all kind of things out there that people can do...the sky is their limit,” said Celestine P. Williams, president of the organization. “Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for all people, not just one race or creed or religion.” Williams said that if there is nice weather on Monday, they expect hundreds will turn out for the march. The MLK Jr. Commemorative Organization was formed by local residents in 1984, a year after Martin Luther King Jr. Day it was signed into law as a national holiday. |

St. Charles Parish plans to go out for construction bids next month on the first phase of the Willowridge levee, assuming a judge rules in the parish’s favor regarding a portion of the land needed for the project.
