Hahnville, Destrehan fall in regionals By Eric LeBlanc The hopes of a St. Charles Parish representative in the 5A state softball tournament were dashed Friday as the Hahnville Lady Tigers and Destrehan Lady Cats were both defeated in the second round. The Lady Tigers fell to the Sulphur Lady Tornados 7-1 at home. The game was close for the first three innings, but the pitching of Sulphur’s Fallon Fisher and the Lady Tor offense were too much to overcome. Leading the Lady Tigers on offense were right fielder Karla Troxler and second baseman Gina Sierra. Troxler, playing in her last game as a Lady Tiger, was two for four with a stolen base and an RBI. Sierra was two for three with a run scored. Starting pitcher Chelsey Flores held Sulphur in check in the first inning. After a single and a walk, she escaped damage by inducing a pop out. Troxler led off the Hahnville first with a single, but a pop out and a double play ended the inning. The Lady Tors broke through in the top of the second. After a walk and a sacrifice, three back-to-back hits produced three runs. The Lady Tigers struck back in the bottom of the third. Sierra led off the inning with a single and third baseman Ariel Romero sacrificed her over to second. One batter later, Troxler singled and brought Sierra in to cut the Sulphur lead to 3-1. But the Lady Tors extended that lead in the top of the fourth on four hits, bringing the score to 6-1. Hahnville threatened in the bottom of the inning after Flores led off with a single, but two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice ended the inning. A leadoff home run gave the Lady Tors a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but Flores held them to just two hits the rest of the way to give Hahnville a chance to catch up. The Lady Tigers had baserunners in each of the last three innings, including two in the sixth after Flores and shortstop Annie Minnich walked, but none of the baserunners would cross the plate and the Lady Tors took the game 7-1. With the loss, the Lady Tigers finish the season with an overall record of 19-8. The Lady Tigers have one graduating senior, Karla Troxler.
H.L. Bourgeois 6, Destrehan 0 The Destrehan Lady Cats also lost by a six-run deficit on Friday as the H.L. Bourgeois Lady Braves took the game 6-0. Lady Cats’ starting pitcher Chantelle Simoneaux pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out three. Five Destrehan errors led to the Lady Braves’ other five runs. Simoneaux was also two for two at the plate. With the loss, the Lady Cats finish the season with an overall record of 20-10-1. The Lady Cats’ graduating seniors are Kacie Brady and Sherri Taylor. Eric LeBlanc can be reached at EricL@heraldguide.com or at (985) 758-2795, ext. 219. |
