HHS Senior, Kali Ann Brou was named the recipient of the 2007 Robert C. Menezes, Sr. Memorial Community Scholarship on graduation night, May 18, at Hahnville High School's graduation ceremony held in the John A. Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana.

The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated leadership abilities, academic achievement, and contributions to the local community.

The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior selected by the school and is in memory of Bob Menezes, who was coach and later principal of Hahnville High School for twenty years until his death from cancer in 1975.

“Ms. Brou is quite a remarkable student, school leader and community volunteer. She has excelled in everything she has become involved in whether it be in the classroom, on the student council or in her church,” said Doris Menezes, widow of the late principal and coach, who made the presentation of the award.

“We are honored to award this scholarship to such a wonderful and gifted young lady. We're pleased to become part of her continuing education as she attends college.”

Brou was a member of the Dance Team for four years, receiving the “Most Inspirational” dance team member award. She mentored students as a “Big Sister”, was a volunteer in the Hurricane Relief efforts, the Buddy Walk for Down’s Syndrome, and the St. Charles Women’s Club Teacup Auction. She actively participated in community activities through her church, being on the Holy Family Leadership Team, serving on the Holy Family Youth Group Core Team, and participating in Teen Catholics Reaching Out in Selfless Service.
