A 23-year-old Destrehan High School graduate, who was a member of the school’s 2007 state championship football team, was found shot to death in St. Rose on Sunday.
At 9:15 p.m., St. Charles Parish deputies were dispatched to Third Street after receiving a call that someone was lying in the road. When they arrived, deputies found Ramal Ellis, of 243 Fourth St. in St. Rose, on the ground behind the Fifth African Baptist Church.
Ellis had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ellis, who went on to attend Southern University after graduating from Destrehan, served as backup to quarterback Jordan Jefferson during Destrehan’s title run in 2007.
So far, authorities have been unable to locate any witnesses who heard or saw anything prior to the discovery of Ellis’ body.

The first murder this year occurred in January when Michael McCray was shot to death in St. Rose while sitting in his car. Four people were arrested and charged in connection with the homicide.
