Spin-off of popular TV show is filming in St. Rose

Quixote Studios has captured their first large scale, long-term contract for a TV series to be produced at their newly constructed production facility in St. Rose.

The studio was still in the process of completing the construction of two 30,000-square- foot sound stages when the site was selected for the production of “Ravenswood,” a spin-off of “Pretty Little Liars,” which has been running on ABC Family for four seasons.

“We weren’t finished. I had to pay some people overtime and get drywallers and painters in there,” Quixote Studios CEO Mikel Elliot said. “We still have some work to do.”

The production crew for “Ravenswood” officially moved into the space on July 9 and is slated to film ten episodes of the series beginning next week and lasting until the end of November.

“Ravenswood” star Tyler Blackburn will reprise his role from “Pretty Little Liars” as Caleb Rivers. Nicole Anderson, know for her role in Disney Channel series “Jonas L.A.,” will also star in the series.

The show is set nearby the fictional town of Rosewood, Penn., which serves as the backdrop for “Pretty Little Liars.”

The series focuses on a boy and his family who own and operate a funeral home. It will follow five strangers whose lives become intertwined by a deadly curse that has plagued their town for generations

Elliot said a funeral home has been constructed within the soundstage that will serve as the main setting for the series.

“It is probably a spooky place,” he said. “This teenage boy’s parents own a funeral home and mischief happens.”

Elliot said having the soundstages booked up for an extended period when they have only just opened is reassuring.

“We’re excited it validates the need to have stages. It validates the fact that I think it is going to work. The proximity to the airport was a nice added benefit for them and the openness of the property worked well for them,” he said.

If the series gets picked up for a second season, Elliot said it is very likely they would be shooting at the St. Rose soundstage for upcoming seasons as well.

“They are shooting 10 episodes initially plus are hopeful of another 15. We’ll know sometime at the end of October if they get picked up,” he said.

The first episode of “Ravenswood” is set to air on Oct. 31, immediately following the Halloween special of “Pretty Little Liars.”

Quixote Studios began construction on the St. Rose location on Airline Highway last year at a cost of $15 million. They are currently in planning for a second phase of construction that would add a 90,000-square-foot soundstage.

Elliot said while the early success of the existing facility is encouraging, they are not yet planning to speed up the next phase of the construction.

“Not right now. It looks like there is definitely a need for it, but I’ve got to catch my breath a little bit and generate some income from the property before we go into the second phase,” he said.

Production crew for “Ravenswood,” which will appear on ABC Family, moved into Quixote Studious in St. Rose last month and will film there until December.
