St. Charles Parish has been noted for its excellent public school system for many years. Indeed, it has been regarded as among the best in the state.
And that has been greatly due to the efforts of superintendents who led the way in continuing exceptional education for their students. They have been leaders that left very few exceptions in choosing the best paths of continuing the best education for our children.
With that in mind, we bid farewell to Dr. Rodney Lafon, who has announced his resignation as superintendent after the current school year. He will have completed 18 years in that position.
Dr. Lafon is memorable in taking the lead in many forward looking projects in our parish school system. These included communication, curriculum, construction, technology, finance and community relations projects.
Though he has been a great leader for the school system, he modestly gives much of the credit for his success to the School Board, administration, teachers, parents, students, staff and the community including businesses and industries for any successes he achieved. As he ends his tenure as superintendent, he continues the line of excellent school superintendents this parish has benefitted from.
The School Board deserves credit for selecting leaders that helped make our school system a real credit to our parish. May it continue to do so as we prepare for the future.
