Five hundred adrenaline junkies are preparing to go through a trail run gauntlet that will take them over log jumps and a wooden bridge this Saturday at the Bonnet Carre Spillway.
Interested participants may register on race day.
This is the second year the St. Charles Trail Run will be held in the spillway. Chuck George, who serves as the race director, founded the Spillway Classic Trail Run but is no longer associated with that race.
While the Spillway Classic Trail Run begins on the spillway levee, the St. Charles Trail Run begins in what George says is the most exciting part – a 3-mile trek through a mountain bike course.
"This course is all trail, it doesnít go on the levee," George said. "The course contains a mostly sandy surface and is well maintained. There is a lot of heavy forest canopy, which is nice because it provides a lot of shade. Itís really beautiful."
Runs through the mountain bike trail used to be known for their wet, muddy surface. However, George said that the trail is so well maintained that it will never get as wet and muddy as it used to.
"This is a trail run, not a mud run," George said. "We have a lot of people that walk the course because they enjoy hiking through it."
This year, the St. Charles Trail Run will also have a half-mile Little Trail Run. Though the race is open to anyone, George said only those finishers 15 years old and younger will receive awards.
All those who finish the 3-mile trail run will receive awards. The first overall male and female will receive $100 while second place earns a runner $75. The man and woman who come in third will receive $50.
After the race, runners will receive free Michelob Ultra beer, red beans and rice, tropical fruit salad and Elmerís Chee Wees along with soft drinks, water and Gatorade.
Because pre-registration is complete, all racers must pay $30 to enter the race. Interested participants may register online at www.NOLArunning.com or can register at the beginning of the race. The race will begin at the Bonnet Carre Spillway adjacent to the boat launch pavilion just off of Airline Highway in Norco.
