Tigers, Wildcats take parishís center stage
Our View - Nov 03, 2011
Pride will be on the line Friday night when the Destrehan Wildcats travel to Hahnville High School to battle the Tigers at 7 p.m.
This year, the annual rivalry battle between both schools just happens to coincide with the end of the regular season, which makes it an even bigger game. Hahnville must win in order to guarantee a spot in the Class 5A playoffs, while Destrehan has nothing to lose after being eliminated from the postseason.
Both teams have gone in opposite directions this season. The Tigers struggled to start the year, dropping three of their first four games. The Wildcats, meanwhile, beat both South Lafourche and St. James to open the season 2-0.
But that was the last time Destrehan would win a game and the Wildcats are now riding a seven-game losing streak. Hahnville, on the other hand, has been impressive down the stretch. The Tigers are now 3-1 in district play, which puts them into a three-way tie for first place with East St. John and Higgins. Hahnville beat Higgins, Higgins beat East St. John and East St. John beat Hahnville.
Though the Wildcats are heavy underdogs, donít expect them to back down. They are a much better team than their record indicates and they would have had a similar record to Hahnville if the ball had bounced a different way in a few close games.
But football aside, this event is more than a game. Itís a time when St. Charles Parish comes together to cheer apart. Most of the players of these two teams are friends and even played on the same teams in Pee Wee football.
The parents of Destrehan football players work with the parents of Hahnville football players and diehard Hahnville fans go fishing every week with diehard Destrehan fans.
Thatís what happens in a rivalry and thatís what makes rivalries such a great tradition.
