Though the favorability ratings of President George W. Bush are claimed to have gone down, it seems that many citizens would side with him on the basic issues, especially here in Louisiana.

In his press conference last week, he emphasized his opposition to isolationism and protectionism. And those two policies are not in the best interests of a free world.
If we had been isolationists in the past, we would not have helped save the world from Nazism during World War II. Had we not stood our ground in the cold war, the communists could run the world today.

Protectionism prevents us from enjoying a free worldwide economy which would benefit us and other liberty-loving nations. By putting tariffs on their goods, we are preventing them from the free trade that could benefit their people and help to enrich nations around the world.

Our President has not hedged at all on what he wanted to do when he took office seven and one half years ago. He wanted to spread freedom and make everyone better off than they were before. When 9/11 came about, it took him time to recover from the shock and perhaps some of his moves were not in our best interests. But in matters of war, mistakes will be made.

And after Katrina, we learned that the federal, and our state government, had a lot to learn in reacting to an emergency. But that is one of the shortcomings of government which cannot match the efficiency of private enterprise when its comes to providing goods and services.

Bush has certainly been sincere and honorable in his pursuits even though he has not succeeded in all of them. But then again, not too many Presidents have.
