Heather R. Breaux BLOG

Editorís Note: The following column was written in response to a story idea sent to me through a reader email. The reader was curious to know who were the most influential women in my life and what women in the news field I admire most. Victoria Comardelle, thank you for your interest - this columnís for you.
When I was in fifth grade, my English teacher asked my class to write a 100-word essay that focused on what we wanted to be when we grew up. Seemed easy enough, right?
Well, yeah - it was an easy topic if you actually knew what you wanted to be when you grew up, but all I could do was crinkle my forehead. I was 9 years old. I had no idea how I wanted to spend the rest of my life.
I didnít know that I wanted to be a writer until junor high school when I learned who Ida Tarbell was.
In my seventh grade history class, I learned about Tarbellís role as a teacher, author and journalist and was amazed to learn that a woman in the 19th century found her niche in investigative journalism - and was respected and honored for it.
Thatís when I started paying more attention to the great array of media around me and became interested in the news profession.
In high school, I would get up each morning and practically brush my teeth to the chimes of NBCís Today show, listening intently to every word Katie Couric spoke.
I wanted to be just like Couric and realized that the scribble sratch in my journals was caged talent just waiting to get out.
So, when I filled out my college applications I listed my major as journalism.
I wanted to learn all that there was to know about the occupation.
Other successful women journalist who have impacted my life have been some of televisionís biggest personalities like CBSís Oprah Winfrey and National Geographicís Lisa Ling.
To see two women rise above adversity and become some of the most powerful voices in the world is very enpowering.
Itís still early in my career, but as I set out on the path before me I hope that I too can make my mark in the the fast-paced journalism profession.
So, whatís my ultimate goal? To get enough words in the right order and nudge the world a little.
