SCP School Board member ELECTED TO NATIONAL OFFICE
Staff Report - May 03, 2007
It’s official. St. Charles Parish School Board member C.H. “Sonny” Savoie has been elected secretary-treasurer of the National School Boards Association.
And he’s ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work on ideas and issues that ultimately will impact schools and students nationwide.
“A school board must demonstrate the resolve to manage resources and maintain sound budgetary practices that support its vision and mission to ensure achievement for all students,” said Savoie.
“I am committed to bringing this philosophy to my role as secretary-treasurer.”
The association chose Savoie at its annual conference in San Francisco.
No stranger to the association, he’s been a member of the NSBA board of directors since 2002.
Savoie has been a member of the St. Charles Parish School Board for 20 years - since 1987 - and has held various offices.
At the moment, he is president of the board.
He has served on the Louisiana School Boards Association’s Board of Directors since 1995 and was president in 2001. Currently, he is serving as an ex-officio member of the board.
Savoie worked for more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry for Chevron/Texaco as well as an independent consultant. He also served as a superintendent search consultant for several years.
Savoie has been a nine-year HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed) math mentor at the middle school level and for the past eight years has taught Junior Achievement to third grade classes. He is retired and actively involved in numerous church and community activities. His hobbies include fishing and golf.
He and his wife Merle have two daughters and four grandchildren. They reside in Paradis.
